Timeing Advance

I did the tone ring mod and went about 4 deg. That is a little more than 1/2 ways to the next kog, about 5/8... ( Center of one kog and through the valley to the center of the next kog being 6 deg.) Haven't noticed any rattle or very little if any and my mpg went up about 1 mpg. Did have to file a considerable amount off the 4 bolt holes to this far (about 3/16") . From what i understand as long as there is no rattle I should be safe, but i have heard that maybe i went to far. What is the max a person can go and should i back off a bit. ?????

I don't know if that's too much or not but they don't call too much timing advance the 'silent killer' for nothing. Someone more knowledgable than me is bound to pipe up.

The only time I hear any timing rattle is at real low load conditions, when you are just rolling along. That is with a lot of tone ring advancement. I have not had any rattle with just the tone ring mod set about the stock bolt limit (dowel pin open up and not controlling movement). That setting seems to be the best mpg setting for my truck. Nice gain over stock setting

The tone ring is just behind the front crankshaft pulley. If you lay under your truck you will see the little ***** on the tone ring. (Search out tone ring) By adjusting this ring you can advance your timming which is becomeing more and more important as the newer trucks have the timming retarted more, giving poor power and poor milage.

It seems like the 03 to 05s it works the best with the least amount of adv. But the 06 and 07s need a lot more adv. And that is where i don't know how much to go. Some have gone nearly one whole tooth which would be nearly 6 deg. adv. Im thinking that is to much BUT ???

Most just file the dowel pin and maybe a slight bit on the 4 bolts and try it. If the valves rattle then just turn it back a bit. Make sure you get all the instructions first. Search "tone ring" Its a free mod and it does work good. Only takes 1/2 hr.

The real question is how much is too much. A lot of the boxes and programmers advance the timing more then the tone ring mod. So if that is okay, move the tone ring and track the performance.

You will be fine as long as you don't get a bunch of timing rattle. I did it way back when on my 03 SO. It gave me a noticeable improvement in off idle throttle response and also a 1 mpg increase. Well worth it for a 30 minute mod....
And yes, if you run a box or programmer that gives you a lot of timing advance then you may have to turn it back to it's stock position. I had to do that on my 03 when I ran the Quadzilla Race Box.
On my 07 I got lazy and just found a Rokktech timing sensor which does the same thing but costs a few bucks. I got it from a member here for a great price. I never get any timing rattle until it gets cold outside. It's still not bad though. I never really noticed any kind of power increase but I do get 16 mpg in town which is exactly what I got in the 03 SO after all the mods...

CGMorgan06,

I did the tone ring mod on my '03 HO & it worked just fine. Added just a bit more crispness in acceleration. Not sure about mileage results (I get about 17 on average, around town & a high of 21.47 on a 450 mile trip, one time).

I filed out the hole that the dowel pin sits in so that the ring could move freely until it is limited by the bolts that hold the ring on. The same as "dieselengineer" did.

On cold start-ups, there is a bit of "rattling" but, that goes away in a few blocks of driving. When warm, I notice no extra noise from timing advance.

The nice thing about this mod is that it's free & reversible, if you don't like it.

You can not get the same reults by playing with static timing as the programmers do.Especialy on the can bus trucks. The timing gets retarded on accel drasticly the programmers can fix this, the tone ring can only change the starting point.

Is the timing retarded during accel or when the boost is high? Agree, the static set point is only the starting point. It appears when towing heavy, the timing is retarded when you are under high load with elevated boost. There is less of a rattle during that condition.
