tell me the pros and cons of a aftermarket cam and springs

I just wanted some input from guys that run aftermarket cams and valve springs like something made made by F1. I just wanted to know how it helped your truck and if it hurt anything. from what ive read and heard a cam helps with egts and cut the smoke down. any input is appreciated

More Power, lower egts, potentially better mileage.
A huge project to change it, and pretty pricey.
And by the way, I went against your request and posted anyway - I do not have a cam or springs.

some are made in China out of cheap material and will never hold up. ( springs and cam )

some are regrinds which some don't mind and other would never touch. ( Lot of back and forth posts on this out there )

some are billet but can have very poor machining done. Tolerances are in the mm, so doing it right is important

F1's are none of the above from what I've seen Don post.

You probably won't notice much seat of your pants different by installing a cam and you'll definitely not notice the springs. Having both does makes a difference when the hp starts going up though.

I have not nticed much of a difference with springs but I will say that it sounds better at higher rpms above 3000. And they are great insurance if you want to pull over 3500 rpm's without floating a valve or 2. I have a friend who tried a helix 2 cam and actually lost .3 in his et and the data logger said he was about a hundred degrees hottr by the end

night and day with the cam and springs in she runs higher rpms and pulls harder and the amount of air she sucks in is huge the turbo loves the cam and springs it cost me 1500 for the install its a massive task that unless you are a master cummins mech you dont want to try.

Another plus, should you happen to have an exhaust brake you have more insurance that the exhaust valves wont crack open during braking. Same thing for high drive pressure (but we don't want that).

ok thanks for the info guys. I know the cam is no easy install. I fully understand that. this winter I may go with some valve springs for a start. if I get anything at all it will be F1. I run his injectors and im very pleased with their power. ive talked to a member on here that runs an F1 cam and he had good things to say

The cam and springs added 26 peak hp on my 06. Spool up was better and egts were lower. The install is not bad if you have good mechanical knowledge and the tools. Myself and Tim C. do them in about 6hrs taking our time and double checking everything. There is no room for error on the springs if you dont get them in right you could trash a engine. The only special tools you need are a dowel set, a shop press to remove the cam gear and some good torque wrenchs. For the springs you need a Cummins valve spring tool, small magnet and a mirror. It will be some of the first mods on my 04. Tim

6 hours with two guys that know what they are doing and have done it before. So that's roughly 2 days for the rest of us.

Uh, no... it is exponentially more difficult. By the time you add the algorithm necessary for beer time, lost hardware and tool runs it goes up to about three weeks...
