Aftermarket Trans, pros and cons

I've been think of finally pulling the trigger and getting a built trans with some upgrades. Did some research about who I would like to build it. Seems like Goerend has the best warranty or I else I can get one built locally but might not as good. As good as a Goerend is, or any other aftermarket trans for that matter, I'm sure that there may come a time when I might have an issue. Anything mechanical and things can happen. If that time does come, will I be required to send my trans a few hundred miles back to the builder or do they usually just tell you to get it fixed locally? For this reason alone I am thinking of going local. Anyone have any thoughts or experience about this? Thanks in advance.

Where are you from? Someone here might be able to refer you to a local shop that they know of if they are close to you. If you lived around here I could point you into the direction of a guy that I would trust as much or more than the popular names such as goerend or ats...He's built 3 for me for various vehicles and they've been as bulletproof as bulletproof can get....also dropped the trans, rebuilt it, and had it back to me the same week.

I have a Hts tranny .It shifted a little hard ,for me,so dusty sent me a new valve body.I love the tranny now!! shifts perfect, puts power to the ground. There are no cons on a built tranny, except the green it takes to buy them!!

I would think find any tranny shop, and as long as you can get a good warranty, it could be worth it.

I like mine... Its peace of mind for me while towing long distances. I dont worry about slippin the t/c or breaking the shafts. The only set back for me is the 3/4 shift thats a little too harsh. From what I've been told the 05 models seem to be worse than others because of the ECM programing

Has anybody ever had to utilize their warranty for an aftermarket transmission?

Staying with the big three mentioned will reduce need of warantty work. A local approved installer for these companies is an advantage.... your nearest one is Boston (DTT).

All three will take good care of you by phone and will work with your local shop if need be.... depending on how far north you are.
But don't do that unless you have a quality local shop. Factory approved and experienced installer is best.
Call the home offices and see how they handle it.... they are use to your question.

I'm going local, personally. I was sold on Goerend until numerous calls got me nothing in return. His assistant took my info, said she'd have Dave call me, and I even went as far as telling her the sale was all but finalized for me and she insisted on talking to Dave first to make sure it was set-up right.

My local guy on the other hand is very knowledgeable, knows a lot about Dodge transmissions, and offers a lifetime warranty regardless of engine mods. He's been real good to my parents who have had a few vehicles done there. If you don't have a local guy that you can trust, I'd definitely go with a Goerend though you just need to have patience and persistence.

Yea, I will be taking him up on the offer. His prices are VERY reasonable as well. Labor is right at 90/hr, but he doesn't charge book he charges actual. Said to do the valve body, torque converter, and what not would be right around 4.5 hours. I just have to do it in bits and pieces, since we're saving to buy a house right now I have to be a good boy with my money

VB rated for 1200 ft lbs, triple disc, billet etc... is 700 or so. To have him do my valve body only (which is what I'm starting with for now), is right around 400 including labor to remove and reinstall. I could have him do it for half the price if I bring it to him, but this way anything I'm not happy with he redoes no questions asked, he gets it tweaked right, etc...
