TCI Torque Converter?

I see in my new Summit catalog they are offering TCI brand lockup Torque Converters for the 48RE, for less than 500 bucks! They are all redone, built heavier, and supposed to be more efficient, etc.

I hate the sloppy POS TC in my truck, there is absolutely no reason why it needs to be screaming along at 2300-2500 RPMS to get a 7-10K load moving. Only problem is that we run a business and I can always find a better place to stick 1200 bucks than in my tranny. So I thought maybe this would be a good compromise. My main concern is about getting a lower stall speed, and picking up some efficiency.

Here is the link to the product:

the part number you need is 142263 3 disc but if you dont plan on adding boxes or power that one will probley do fine to tighten up your shifts less stall

I don't really plan on adding any power--this truck will pull anything I need it to the way it is, especially if the converter was worth a crop. With these new fuel systems, etc. I just don't trust the added power in terms of engine longevity. I went thru a lot of hassles after adding power to my 99 PSD that I do not want to go thru again, cost me too much money. I would sure have the believe this TC is better than the one it came with off the lot...Install will prolly cost me as much as the TC does. Wonder if there is a good market for my OEM TC?

I need to include my story with tci.
I bought a converter from them for my 95 back about 97, and had a problem
The snout was NOT machined correctly, thus tore up the front seal. I called them, they said to send it back for inspection. Two weeks later I receive a converter that was machined correctly.
I HAD to pay shipping both ways!!! This was clearly their issue, but they made the customer pay extra for it.

I won't recommend them, or buy from them again.
I had to pay my installer twice also.

sounds like to me your installer is a fault also for not checking it out before he stuck it in the hole

Well j-fox, that isn't what I wanted to hear. I am sure this can happen, but they ought to take better care of you than that. After your initial problems, did the converter work well and do what you wanted it to do? The TCI unit is probably the only way I will ever upgrade my stock TC. As I mentioned before, I have all kinds of places to stick 1200 bucks that will pay me back a lot better than a new torque converter.

Not sure if your an E-bay fan or not, but there are a few companies on there with single clutch TC's for the Dodge in the same price range, I agree if your sig sums up all the power you need then a single would be a good choice.

I used one in my 1993W250.Worked fine and as described.Lots of things change since 1997.I'd call Summint and ask how many sold, any issues etc.You can also contact TCI direct(I did back then)and ask about warranty, return policy etc.

I installed a TCI converter in my Tahoe a few years ago. It wasn't balanced properly so I had to remove it, send it back, wait for a new one to be mailed, and then reinstall it. Having to remove and replace a transmission twice because TCI didn't have the most basic quality control is unacceptable to me. The second one seems to be holding up fine but I only have about 20,000 miles on it. Regardless, I will never purchase another TCI product.

The converter was 'just ok'. It was lower than stock stall, but not enough.
After an employee 'stole' the truck and went drag racing for a day the converter clutch was slipping. The trans had been rebuilt by a top notch 727 builder a year before.
I, in a weak moment, sold the truck and still regret it. very strong runner with 22 mpg.
One day my trailer had to be used and the brakes were frozen. About 4500 lbs total. I drug it around the block to get them free, didn't work, had too use heat. local guys still talk about that day!!!
