Synthetic Oil??
Synthetic Oil??
Morning everyone, I am not sure if this is where I should post this question, but it is technically a high performance upgrade. I just want to know what everyone thinks on this subject and what kind of synthetic oil you use. Also, I would like some input about the oil that I use, I use ROYAL PURPLE 15w40. Thank you to everyone who gives me some insight on this VERY opinionated subject.
I also use Royal Purple 15w40, have been for 35,000 miles, love the oil. a bit pricey at first i thought, but the miles i drive a month it is money well spent. I change the filters every 5,000 and oil at 15,000, I could probaly go further but i also tow everyday. Performance wise I saw no increase. Engine ran quieter and smoother and from the demonstrations i saw i'm sure the motor is well lubricated.
I also run RP 15W40/cummins oil filters and I haven't had any issues. 40K miles I agree it is a bit pricey but I always try and buy the best for my truck. I am plan on driving my truck a long time
I run Amsoil AME 15w40 and an Amsoil filter on my truck. I run 30k miles between oil changes, and get oil analysis done every 5k. Analysis said I could have gone longer than 30k, but I felt like changing it at that point, and I am happy with a 30k mile oil change interval.
Royal Purple is my favorite oil for severe use. Like in my track car. 6,000+ rpm's lap after lap really beats on the oil.
I don't use it in the diesel, because it just doesn't see that kind of abuse. I don't see the point to spending $32 a gallon, when I can spend 1/4 of that to get what I need. It's like spending extra money to get tires rated to 160mph. It sounds good on paper, but you'll never get the use out of the extra capability.
In the end, though, you have to do what helps you sleep at night. If spending that much money on an oil change makes you happy, who's to argue with that?

Thanks for the input everyone. Hey bob how are you, I agree with your point, but just to let you know, I do use my truck for heavy hauling. We have a 40' fifth wheel camper that we use at a minimum of once a month and weighs approx 18k when fully loaded. Our trips range from 20 miles to a local campgroun to over 1000 miles when time is available. Thanks again, I love this forum and appreciate all the information that I find here.

For a diesel engine, that's not really sever use, that's what they're designed for. That's one of the reasons that it takes 3 gallons of oil, and not the standard 5qts like a gas engine.
The two things that classify as sever use for oil is high heat and high rpm's. Lots of people who use their trucks just like you do have done UOA's in dino oil. As long as it's changed at the required intervals, it's holding up just fine.
The other advantage to synthetic oil is that you can extend the change interval. If you drive a lot, that's pretty handy. It probably doesn't save you any money, but might make your life more convenient.
