Swiss Cheese Air Box

What size holes should I drill in the bottom of my air box to get more air?

I *think* I drilled 6 or so 1-1/2" dia holes. Stopped pulling the filterminder down immediately.

Just grab your favorite hole saw and go at it till it looks good

Did you add a piece of foam or anything on top of the holes? I was thinking of doing something, but wondered if much extra junk would get into the airbox by drilling holes.

Do you notice any difference (performance, spooling up) after adding the holes?

I see you sig says you have an AFE? Any thoughts if this helps one way or another, or can you tell if any change is due to the AFE or the holes. thats probably way to many questions.

Ladies nylons work great. Size accordingly.

i can't tell any diff. between the box with holes (airaid filter) & the cold air intake (k&n).
i usually will swap out between the two when it's time for a cleaning, doesn't take much time

Hardware store mod

You may wish to try the hardware store mod. Cut a 4" hole in the bottom of the filter box and get a clothes dryer vent and remove the hood and flapper and and shorten the vent tube to an appropriate length. Install vent through the hole in the airbox; secure with screws. Install a piece of vent hose from the vent tube to either the fog light opening if you do not have fog lights or any other convenient opening. This will give you a cool air inlet outside the engine compartment.

I second the cold air idea. I learned from a member here. I installed a 4" toilet flange in the bottom of the airbox and then ran a dryer duct hose to the front bumper just behind the fog lamp.

Since then, my filter minder does not suck down when I pull a load like it did when it was stock. That is plain proof that it is now getting the air it needs.

My minder hasn't moved down any since I put in the Amsoil Nanofiber dry drop in filter. Seems this would mean it is getting enough air? Or should I also swiss cheese bottom of box?

Actually, ladies Nylon is VERY restrictive, at least the piece I used on my old '86 Z28 was. The car was equipped with a Mass Air Flow meter, and I pulled the air filter and box completely off, and put a piece of ladies nylon over the meter, and the car barely ran. The nylon was choking off the air supply to the motor. That was my experience with ladies nylon and cars. Granted that was 16 years ago, so with today technology, ladies nylon maybe better breathing
