Straight Pipe noise level 04.5
That is what I was going to ask if anyone on here has used the flex pipe like I've seen on big rigs.
I think that would be easier to do and cheaper than buying a genos eliminator kit of any others. Would you just use a sawzall or a torch to remove the muffler?
In my first post i said cat, and that big oval thing....well I was wrong...the big oval thing is the cat.....sorry...just first diesel i have had and i was looking in the dark.
Must say...like the CTD....just wish it had more sickem off the line....but once the turbo spools...Holy crap!

Yea, you could just take a sawzall to the stock piping and cut the muffler off and size up a piece of flex pipe in there and use a couple clamps to hold it down and it should be good... but for me, even though it wouldn't regularly be seen, I could not bring myself to do it because I know how it'll look to me every time I'm under the truck.
As for more getup and go.... that can always be solved by just one lil box.

nothing wrong w/ flex pipe, but it shouldn't be used to make bends, it's designed to be run straight.
I use flex pipe on all my exhaust configurations... reduces resonance, and makes it easier to connect/disconnect when you need to work on the truck... put a little bend in it, slide it on one end, bend it back straight slide it back onto the other end. band clamp both end, and you're in business.

I've heard a lot of guys straight piping, My 5" from BD Power came with a 5" straight pipe section. Anyone with feedback on 5" straight pipe? I've got a nasty drone with this set up. I'd love for this thing to bark but want a droneless set up while highway driving.
Not a big fan of turndowns but if it reduces drone in the cab at highway speeds, I'm sold. I just hope I don't get flamed by all my buddys.

my buddy had the City Muffler 5" setup on his 04.5 QC dually... at first he had the muffler installed backwards... it sounded dang near straight piped, and the resonance drove him crazy...
so he turned the muffler around... helped a little, but still too much...
so we put a tip on it that stuck out another 4-5" and turned down and back... helped a little more, but still too much!
so he put a big truck resonator on it... that too helped, but it was STILL too much with 30,000lbs hooked up, so he yanked it all off and put the stock exhaust back on!
if you run empty, put a spitload of sound deadener in the cab and straight pipe it... if it's too much, put a turndown/back tip on it and pray that it helps enough to live with it!
bottom line is 5" resonates... sounds awesome, but resonates!

Thanks Forrest, If you check out my gallery you'll see i've spent ALOT of time trying to silence my beast. I think I'll try the straight pipe out this summer. If I have to live with a drone, then everyone within two blocks will here it too.
I might have to check to make sure mine isn't in backwards.

oh, I know all about silencing the beast!!! looks like you've done your fair share!
I've got 1/8" of lead sheet on the back wall and the roof, 1/16" everywhere else...
and I've gone through about 15 different exhaust configurations in the last year (no exageration!!!)
oddly enough, often straight pipe has LESS interior resonance than the wrong muffler does!!

Maybe I've still got a bit of that young and stupid in me, but I don't have a problem with any resonance... not on this truck or the Hemi with a 40 series and chopped pipe.
Also, what's so wrong with a turndown??

probably young and stupid... I've been around hot rods for years, and I've got a little ringing in my ears... I think maybe I'm more sensitive to it now because my body's trying to protect what's left of my hearing!

Yea, I've always had loud trucks... the loudest was my '66 which I just had stright pipes on with 4" echo tips... that was loud! That and I work on a Jet for the Navy that is by far the worst one to stand next to on the flight deck when it's taking off and just be around in general when it's turning.
Ok, here's my pix... sorry it took a few days, but I never got home while it was still daylight to take them. The first is the stock pipe out of the CAT, next is the pipe I had installed and the last is to show the bend in it.
{Removed the pix since they weren't showing up due to data transfer on yahoo... uploaded into gallery and when approved, they'll be there}

oh yeah, didn't mean any insult w/ the young/stupid thing!
I don't have a problem w/ the 3rd gens if you straight pipe 'em... I think the factory pipe is thick gauge and just doesn't resonate like the aftermarket 5" systems...
my 5" system on my truck wasn't bad, but I don't haul anything...
now the stacks?! that's a whole different ballgame right there... 30 minutes around town? no problem... 8hrs straight on the road once a week? too much!
