Steel 22.5" wheels
Steel 22.5" wheels
I went to the big truck junk yard today to look for some used 22.5 wheels. They had 6 alcoas on a truck they just brought in. They want 175 a pc for the rims. Not a bad price, BUT I am leaning towards maybe running all steels for now since I can pick all 6 steels up for under $300 and then put similators on them. I realize they are heavier, but they don't seem that much heavier and I could do the swap sooner. I picked up 2 steels today to check my clearance and all seems well if I run the 255/70/22.5 tire. I called a big rig tire company and they told me that this is basically the smallest choice. They make a 245 tire, but it is the 75 aspect which makes it about the same diameter.
Before I go and buy the rest of the steels, can anyone tell me a good reason why NOT to ? Also, anyone running equal for balancing ?

Hey Checkmate bein runnin 22.5 for almost two years now so far its been good had the equal didn't like think weights do better. The only down fall to the big tires is the ply rating makes for a rougher ride.

I don't know of anybody running an all steel setup. I know it takes a lot more "ooommff" to get them rolling even with just 4 aluminum and 2 steel wheels. I also know that there is a pretty big difference in weight of the steel wheels compared to the aluminum ones.
Equal is no good, like JD said. I had my setup spun balanced on a computer tire balancer at a local big rig tire shop. This work very well for me. I will even say they are the best balanced aftermarket wheel and tire setup I have ever owned. Couldn't be happier. No more money than you will have in the steel wheels, you couldn't go wrong in tring them. You can always go back and buy Alcoas if you have to.
