Smarty with stock automatic?
Smarty with stock automatic?
I'm thiniking of going with the smarty for my 07 5.9 now. It currently has a stock tranny and converter. If i do decide to go with the smarty, an afe, and silverline 4" exhause and a walbro fuel pump what should be done to the tranny? i will be pulling a gooseneck some but not all the time. If i can keep my smarty turned down when pulling and turn it up hotter when driving or out playing would i be okay with just a converter or do i need to do valvebody, input and output shafts too or is this a waste, just go with a full billet tranny from somewhere? i know a guy that builds professional trannies but i was wandering what other problems i will have after a converter? thanks abunch
If you're going with just the Smarty, a TC, VB and possibly a billet input. It really depends on your driving style. If you plan on future upgrades, like most people end up doing, just go all out and not worry about it. With just the Smarty you can still mess things up with just the minimum.
well just to let you know my buddy just roasted his stock tranny with his smarty on 90 hp setting. his tranny fluid was black and the truck wouldn't go anywhere when in gear and reved up.
I have had my smarty on level nine for over 4 months, I tow an enclosed four place sled trailer through the rocky mountains every 2 weeks, loaded with 4sleds and gear and buddies. I drive the truck everyday all day, smoke the tires here and there.... and the stock tranny seems to be holding fine. I think most guys just go out and trash their trucks too hard and thats why the tranny doesn't stand up. I don't try to pass going up hill with the trailer on, I just let the truck pull normal. It got a little hot in some icey conditions and the tires were spinning in 4x4 going through a mountain pass, and it started to shift a little funny. I slowed down let it cool down and it's still fine, and that was 5000 miles ago....who knows maybe tomorrow the tranny falls out... but so far so good..
If your going to do tranny upgrades anyway, just run the Smarty with the Stock tranny for as long as you can. You might be surprised how long it will last. But it all depends on driving style.

Im running my stock auto with the Smarty on 9 to. No problems so far. The trans sux though and definately needs upgrading....but it was that way before the Smarty.
One of these days I will actually get to put that power to the ground before reaching 50+ mph with a locked tq converter.
You can tear it up if you try and abuse it, or you can run it a long time still stock if you treat it right.
You guys on level 9 aren't getting a shudder really bad when you attempt to pass at highway speeds or anything? I did badly and had to drop down to level 5 to try and prolong the tranny life....

hmmmm. hey i was in the same boat as you ... i don't own a smarty but i thought i could run my J/A on level 5 and drive like a sane man ...BUT !! i ended up just cooking my freshly changed atf+4 ... your days are numbered on a stock tranny if you are running the hp numbers in your profile ... i would strongly suggest a vb and t/c at the least !! or you are gonna do more than cook the tranny fluid .. i was lucky i didn't do any other damage ... but it can be catistrtophic... only MHO

I run my Smarty on #9 80% of the time. No Trans problems what so ever!!! My buddy has an 05 with an edge box and his slips like mad when he gets on it. But then again he will be the 1st one to admit he is very hard on his rig. I on the other hand am not...
I am not having any problem with a shudder at highway speeds. I can't wait for my tq converter to lock up.....because once it does my truck becomes a beast on the highway.
It has power around town too, but I can just feel that inefficient tq converter not putting all the power to the ground. Once it locks at about 50-55mph.........I feel like somebody is back there PUSHING me forward and the engine just settles down into a quiet, rumbling, comfortable beast. From about 60 to Uhh....(very fast)
.....I can feel every bit of the 466 hp, it dyno's. Around town, I take it easy and try not to stress the trans much.
