IIRC I can elaborate a little more. Let me start with a little history. Some were complaining of too much smoke. This was initially not really understood by Marco since he lives in Italy and his trucks did not smoke the way ours did. Through a lot of research and testing done by Bob an Marco it was determined that the quality of the fuel we have in the US is not as good as what they have in Italy. (surprise surprise)
In fact, the fuel quality varies fairly significantly from region to region within the US resulting in some people having more smoke than others. With this information it was determined that the advanced timing was the primary cause of the smoke. So the betas were born.
The initial programs of the JR were pre revo and only contained 3 settings. The betas were also pre revo and reduced the timing. The revo was the final product and incorporated the betas along with the original settings. Note that had the same torque management was used throughout and the introduction of the revo was the first opportunity to reduce the torque output from the original "mild" setting. (Version 5.08 is excluded from that statement ofcourse.) Since obviously the tq & tm setting are the same at each power let me give some examples.
timing 4, torque 2 same as original programming
timing 3, torque 2 first beta, pretty much eliminated the smoke but lost too much power and raised EGT higher than most liked.
timing 2, torque 2 final beta and used as default setting on revo, offered a good balance between smoke and power/EGTs
I hope this helps.

I'm running 5.09 ver and on Tm4 Tq2 on sw2 or 3 it can and will lay a cloud and is the most aggressive on the throttle as well. I had Bob send me the 5.07 pre pod and 5.08 but for some reason they wouldn't load but 5.09 had no issue reloading so not sure why. Oh well my pc crashed and lost everything anyway.
