EGT's are actually lower with my Smarty on sw#1 & #3. Gauges are a necessity though.

I know most of the posts on this thread are manual guys but I have an auto.. looking to buy a smarty and I have my gauges but no tranny mods yet. I know my tranny cannot handle a lot of abuse but my question is.. If i run on #3 what cant I do? I like to hotdog it once and a while from a light and from a roll. When I say hotdog I mean punching it and waiting that split second for the turbo to spool. I try not to spool on the brake and I dont do burnouts so other than that is there any guidelines to driving a smarty truck with a stock auto??

I am still on my stock transmission (upgrades coming!) and mine is holding Smarty on level 9. I tow heavy. I play a little bit, mainly on the highway after the tq converter is locked. But I have had no problems with my stock transmission related to the power, so far.

I just leave mine on 9 all the time now and use my right foot and my egt gauge to monitor everything. I don't back off on the Smarty settings for towing either.

If you drive sensible and don't "abuse" the stocker trans, they CAN hold up a while. If you like to do burn outs and boosted launches....it won't last long.

I don't like the way the stock trans performs below 50ish mph, but it is not "broken", it just has a sloppy factory tq converter.

Dyno numbers are 467hp/915tq........on 2 different dynojets a couple of months apart.

Wow, now that's pretty impressive.

On the back of the smarty and in the manual I belief it says level 3 is the highest they reccomend taking a stock auto to. But as TexasCTD has pointed out, anything is possible.

By the way, does the smarty enable the high idle feature? So now all I have to do is get a relay to turn it off when i press in the clutch??

I put 14k on mine with Smarty level 3 (Standard Smarty and Beta 4.4).....just got my tranny modes, builder told me my trans looked brand new....

Moral of the story, if you dont drive like mad max on the stock trans you'll be ok....at least on level 3....

Yes it does add the high idle feature but since it a 6 speed you need to do something else I think it might be a relay but I am not for sure I would have to get back with my buddy had done it to his.

Shane.....Luvnacumns is making I believe 571hp...even prior to his twin turbos....still on a stock trans. We may have just been lucky so far...I don't know. Some guys have trouble with their transmissions even stock. So I am not really suggesting for anybody to do as I do.....but the stock 48RE can handle some power if driven sensibly.

you must buy a ecm pin from cummins(about $7) install it into pin 22 on the ecm and ground the other end. very simple, takes a few minutes to do.
