Smarty Beta V4.4

Bob Wagner was nice enough to send me a new Beta V4.4.

I loaded the Beta SW3 software last night and all I can say so far is... UNBELIEVABLE!!!

Here is the feedback I sent Bob after a 300mile drive today:

Unfortunately, I can’t accurately tell you hand calced mileage at this time. I left Omaha with a little less than ½ tank and drove about 180 miles. That took it down to 1/8 tank. After I filled up, I drove another 120 miles and I have a little more than ¾ tank right now. I do not have the vent tank mod, so that is better than normal. The overhead is reading 19.2 right now. I was driving 72-74mph in 20-30mph crosswinds and headwinds all day. Normally and consistently, my overhead is about 1.4 miles higher than hand calced. This has been the case when stock, and with previous Smarty versions. My overhead has never displayed over 17.4 on that same run, ESPECIALLY in the conditions I drove today. I would normally get about 14.5-15 under todays conditions. If the overhead is still off by the same amount, then I was getting 17.8mpg today.

Here is some other feedback:

1. Much less smoke at low boost/strong effort pulls up hills. Generally speaking, a lot less smoke under almost all driving conditions. I could still blackout tailgaters with a quick tap of the accelerator though.

2. Much smoother idle

3. Power is more consistent and linear, especially at ¼ - ¾ throttle.

4. When I let of the accelerator pedal, it goes down to idle almost immediately. I’m not sure that’s a good thing, as the tranny clunks slightly when you let off the throttle at low speeds without TC lockup.

5. The transmission shifting is much smoother for some reason, and the TC locks up with authority sooner than it did before under ½-full throttle conditions.

6. Much less timing rattle under all conditions. It is almost completely gone.

My truck feels like a completely different animal with the beta software. It sprints down on ramps like there is nothing holding it back. With my previous version, I had to get deeper into the throttle, and there was a lot more smoke.

At this point I couldn't be more satisfied!!!

I will go through 3 tanks next week, and will post hand-calced mpg's for those interested.

I knew that question would come. I need to install a new probe for my EGT guage, so I can't answer that right now. I should have that in by next weekend.

I don't want to sound like a jerk, but I made a commitment to Bob. I cannot email or share this software, so please don't ask.

so what is it with all these beta versions? is this something for the high horsepower guys or will this be a regular software version that anyone can download. I am fairly happy with what I am running right now, but this review sounds very good.
thanks

RonP,

This software has plenty of power, but it is also showing a strong increase in mpg's. I have talked to Bob a couple of times since I got my Smarty about mileage software. When he sent this software to me, it was referred to by him as a "Towing and Mileage" software. It still has the nine power levels, but whatever changes they made seeem to be doing a lot for mileage. The way the power comes on would also be very beneficial when towing. The power comes on very strong and holds and with less pedal input than the previous version I was running.

I got a new thermocouple this morning, so I should be able to reinstall my EGT guage tomorrow and give feedback there.

I have only run the Edge Juice, and the current Smarty software before getting to try this version. This is absolutely the best I have driven. Keep in mind, I have it set on SW3, so there is still plenty more power available. I'm really going after mileage more than anything as I test this.

Come on Bob, share the love...

I've purchased two SmartyCR's, one for myself and one for the old man, and I haven't used mine for the last six months due to excessive smoke and poor fuel mileage. I've held onto it in hopes that someday it would evolve, and it sounds like it's finally there. It would be nice to be able to use my $685 paper weight sooner then later.

I've only got 50 miles testing on ver 4.4 Towing and Mileage - Level 3....outside temps are 95*+

It appears to have a Limited Boost Fooling Function with a 35psi limit?? Not sure, but previously it only did 31 psi spiked (non boost fooling version), and did 40+psi with the previous boost fooling version....quick letoff did not bark the turbo....

EGT's 0-90mph were max of 1100* (Pre Turbo)...seems better than previous version...(approx 1250*)....it does take longer to cool the turbo down (think the timming at idle was lowered to reduce rattle)....at 70mph, 5psi, egt's were 600*....moderate accelleration on surface streets is approx 800*

Smoother Idle with no rattle (Previously, i had moderate rattle at idle)

Smoother Shifting with stronger tc lockup...seems to hold shifts longer (changed shift points?)...as well, didnt see the 1-2-1-2 shuffle with light throttle...but need to test more.

SMOOTH Power, Deceptively Fast, feels nice with 35psi of boost....very linear feel to the power....seems to pull longer through the rpm range....before you know it with 1/4 throttle, you're doing 70 mph

There is less smoke, but i was still able to get a nice puff at low boost....still there if you need it

Mileage indicator is way up, but not sure if it's true....50 mile loop, mixed city / highway.....driving moderately hard....indicator shows 18 mpg....don't wait for a mileage update from me....thats not why i bought an 8k lb truck!

Too much traffic to test to see if top speed limiter has been removed....could only get it to 90mph...will test tonight....

Another update tonight after it cools down some and there's less traffic....

Bob / Marco will have to give the official answer....but the Towing / Mileage beta version 4.4 has all 9 levels....so i'm assuming it's the "new version"....that will be used for everyone..e.g. regular software to be posted on the site....when they believe it's ready for release....i'm guessing here, but we know ther's a towing and mileage version, we know there's a $50k in modifications Racing version (someone else posted it had a 240+hp gain)....so it appears that there will be something for everyone...

I was happy with the version i was running as well.....this one looks promising....from what i've seen vs the previous 5 versions (for an 06) i'd use it for the following improvements: less smoke, no rattle at idle, what appears to be a 35psi boost limit (for us stock turbo guys that dont want to twist their shaft off)...improved shifting, good egt control, linear power....

All around good stuff....

Man these beta versions are really sounding good. Im still running the original software on #9 daily and the egt's are controllable. But it seems the egt's are actually lower and mileage is better. This sounds good.

Hey Bob,

Can you send me a copy of the beta software? I've got a long road trip next weekend, would love to see what kind of mileage I can get with the new version.

I got my EGT probe hooked up tonight and went out for a run. I saw the same temps and boost levels as jgiachino. I'm not as knowledgeable on the performance side, but this thing runs pretty tight. the tranny shifts quicker and with more authority. Like said before, the power is very linear so it pulls hard right out of the gate until I hit the cruise.

Thanks for the reply. This sounds like what I need for sure. I do tow a good bit and I love the smarty, but I haven't really noticed much increase in the mpg department. I also don't care for the way the truck idles and the timing rattle I have right now. I am still running what was on the smarty when I got it because there seemed to be complaints with everything that came out. this however, sounds really good. So how/when do we get it Bob?

thanks guys
