If you're cheap like me you can buy a 1' piece of 5.5" aluminum tubing from Air Flow Systems for about $13 to replace the silencer tube. Cut the tube about 6.75" long.

Park and the Davis Mnts. and if ya know anything about that area there isnt a cell-con. for about 80 miles in all directions. Again thanks for the help. Still waiting on my Eliminator to come in.

I'm even cheaper... Went to a local muffler shop and all they had was 5" pipe remnant left over from a bus exhaust job they've done. They cut me a piece 7" long and just gave it to me. It threw them a fin a couple beers. 5 inch diamter is a bit smaller than the original baffled pipe, but you can tighten those clamps and they'll snug up with no problem whatsoever. FWIW...

I installed the 5.5" tube last night in place of the intake silencer. I dunno, it's pretty loud. And that's without a load. I can't imagine what the turbo will be like towing a trailer!

I really like the "whoooosh" sound the turbo puts out. Not too sure about the sound it makes under a load... kinda sounds like a jet airplane. I'm likin' it, but I guess it's not for everyone. I think if I put a different airbox on there, I'd be putting that baffled intake tube back in there, as it might be too obnoxious.
That's a bomb waiting to happen...

I pulled my silencing ring out and noticed a little difference...Then I took the baffles out, THAT was the big difference. You can actually hear the turbo with it in neutral and give it some throttle.
My question is this, will this make the turbo louder through the exhaust also ? I can't be in the drivers seat and at the tailpipe to see.

The best one yet was when my dad followed me home the 200+ miles after I bought the truck. When we got to a light he asked me if I could hear the brakes. He said something was dragging and when I hit the brakes it would stop. He said it was a high pitched noise kind of like a jet getting ready to take off. I told him it was probably the turbo he was hearing. He said, No it has to do with the brakes because when you step on the brake, the noise stops, and he said he could hear it 100 ft back on the highway.
I told him I would have to check it out, even though I knew it had to be the turbo.
I'll have to have him follow me again now that it's louder and see what he thinks.

Ohh yeah, he told me to check the rear drum for a loose spring. I'm still looking for a rear drum.

The other day I tried to remove the snap ring, no give. Whats the catch to removing it. I don't want to scratch the surface of the inlet.

Banshee,
To remove the snap ring requires two screwdrivers. A medium size common to get some bite on the edge of the snap ring and a smaller common to dig under the ring when lifted. Then slowly work the ring out of the groove.

MikeyB, If you don't mind; I'm curious what Air Flow Systems wanted for that piece? did you have to custom order it?

thanks,
daniel

I know that the turbo will be a lot louder if i put on a BHAF or other airfilter system but with taking out the baffles or replacing that pipe, will i be able to hear it better inside and outside the truck with my stock air filter?

dgm, think I paid $21 for 1' piece shipped to my door. It was shipped the next day so they had the material on hand.

HorseHauler, I have a stock setup other than a 4" 90 degree elbow on the bottom of the airbox. With the silencer tube and ring removed the turbine whine is loud. It took a few days but I'm getting use to it now.

I just used a 1/0 fish hook (big salmon size) and some vice grips, pop the end up and run the hook around the circumferance. Should take about 3 seconds.

MikeyB,

How did you cut the 1' piece from Air Flow Systems? Is there much danger of bending/smashing it with a hacksaw?

thanks,
daniel

dgm,
I took it to the machine shop at work and they cut it with a big band saw.
No problems with it in the clamp and after it was done they deburred the rough edges.
