shutter on launch

Just installed my coilspacers and some 2" blocks in the rear. Everything went fairly well and the truck looks great. However, there's a farily nasty shutter when taking off now. I always had a slight vibration, but now it's really noticable. Any thoughts? I read a long time ago about spacing down the center support on megacabs. Think this is still the case?

Right. That's what I meant. Question is...is that what's wrong? Hmmm...

Anyone done this before? Did you shim the two bolts holding the bearing to the plate, or the four bolts holding the plate to the truck.

I put an 8" piece of 2"X2" box steel between the carrier bearing and the bracket on my 03. you could try some 1"X2" or some thinner plate stock. I don't trust stacking washers.

WOW...you brought it down 2" for a 5" lift. That was more then I thought it would have to go. I was thinking maybe 1" at most. I like the 1" tube steel idea. Any reason you did it at the carrier rather then the mounting plate?

I have some tube steel at home. I think I'll try that idea. I guess it can't hurt. I'll need new bolts though. I suppose they're metric.

That is definitely the problem. Get an angle finder, and check the angle of the driveshaft and the differential. It should be within 2 degrees of each other.

An angle finder on the shaft I can see, but how do you measure the pumpkin? Is there a flat on it somewhere? Seems like a little rust would be enough to throw off the measurement 2 degrees.

the driveline angle could play a part in the shutter but, what causes it is pinion wrap. What will help it is a set of traction bars.

Soft springs are needed for a soft ride but, they can't control the axle wrap. Ladder bars take care of that.

There's a flat on the bottom of the diff. Just make sure it is clean.

I'll check into that. Seems just as easy to just try and shim it with 1/4" shims till it goes away. I can make a permanant one pc shim after that.

OK. I put two 1/4" shims under it for a 1/2" total and it's back to normal again. That's to say it's just a very slight vibration. Next step is to put 3/4" in it and see if it will disappear. Not sure who suggested it, but I can't see making the drive shafts in line. Seems like that would take several inches of drop.

You don't need to make both drive shafts in line......you need to make the angles the same. Angle of pinion yoke need to be the same angle as the yake right behind the carrier. The have to be on the same "plane". The driveshaft yokes can be 6 inches off, and everything still be fine ( no vibrations ) as long as the angles are the same.
