shaving calipers ? safe ?

I can get 35" Micky Thompson Bajas tires on 17 "maxxis helo rims, which came off a H2 but the rims will not fit over my calipers about 1/4 " to big. rims will fit a 2005 ram but not my 06 think it would be safe to shave the calipers a bit to get those rims to fit any ideas? I am in love with the combo
and will save about 1000 bux off new. hoping they will fit without 2" lift for a few months anyway..

I wouldn't do it either. Brakes are a major safety component. If you machined them and had a failure that resulted in an injury or death it could come back to haunt you legally as you knowingly altered a major safety item. Machining them could weaken them where they may break or leak under extreme stress such as a panic stop.

Plain and simple don't do it. Have you looked into what is different between 05 and 06? Is it possible to install 05 calipers on it instead?

I have the Hummer H2 rims on my 06 . I only had to have the centers milled out , so they would fit over the hubs.

It seems to be this particular brand of wheel only in the 17" size anyway, I was thinking of having the inside of the wheel milled but alot would have to be shaved off , didnt think shaving the inside would be safe especially since i carry a plow some times. 06 have bigger cailpers not sure if 05 would fit. the wheels will sit on the lug nuts about 1/8 but thats it, the rim gets narrow inside.

As far as grinding calipers, I know tons of guys (myself included) who ground the edit out of their calipers on 98-02 Camaros/Firebirds to fit 15" Weld racing wheels...I'd try a spacer first though.

I did that on my camaro also but this is'nt a 3500 lb car he's talkin about either

Yeah I did it on my 1/2t 74' chevy. It just depends on the calpier thickness and how much you feel comfortable taking off, but a 1/4 inch is a lot of metal to remove.

Bad Idea... Find an alternate solution and leave the grinder turned off.
The risk is way too high... How about an aftermarket Caliper?

You say that you need to grind off a 1/4" of the caliper, but how much of the width of the caliper will you actually be grinding down, About 1/2 to 2/3 of it im assuming?

This is common practice in the offroad world in order to fit 15" wheels on a front dana 60. The quickest way to do it is with a 9" angle grinder. On front 60's you have to grind about 2/3 of the caliper down about a 1/4" in order to fit the wheels, just as you are talking about doing. Its actually a very common thing t odo and I have never seen any negative side affects because the calipers are extremely thich, especially in the are that needs to be ground down.

Get a different set of wheels, are you sure they are 17", cause my calipers and my father in laws calipers are the EXACT same, and he has a 03 and a 05.

Do you run the risk of killing a young family due to brake failure in the "offroad world"?

I wouldn't even suggest the possibility to someone considering this modification.
