To Sandblast or not?

Should I get my H2 wheels sandblasted or not? I talked to a dozen shops and half said they needed sandblasting and the others said no. The sandblasting and powdercoating is going to cost me $70 a wheel, which is $280 total. One shop who does alot of wheels said $130 for all 4. The 130 shop said they use a special cleaner and phosphate primer that will adhere to the alloy wheels just fine. So what route should I go??

......The thing is, I was trying to save money buying the H2 wheels, and settled for them cause they looked pretty good and were cheap.........so I thought! $140 for machining, $216 for 5 wheels, and $130 at the cheapest to get them powdercoated. I could have gone to discount tire and got some pimpsters for that much. ....Well I guess I will still be saving a few $$, but add another $150 for sandblasting and I will feel like I made a mistake!

..so do you guys think the powdercoating will hold up and look good without sandblasting the h2 wheels? I dont do much offroading and dont know how they would get scratched anyway? Is there another reason to sandblast other than how the powdercoating adhears, or what?

Powdercoating will hold up just fine without sandblasting. As long as they are not rusty or have a bad finish, then just strip any paint, scuff with 220 grit sandpaper, and coat. I would also out-gas (heat in the oven for 20-25 minutes at 425) to get any gasses that are trapped in the casting out right before you PC them.

They can chemical etch too...

Just trust the powdercoater...they are the ones who will have to fix their work if it does not take.

powdercoat them, just let the powdercoater take care of it..

My friend has a powdercoating place in San Antonio and last i talk to him he was gonna charge me $25 a rim to powdercoat and plus she was gonna send them off and have them cleaned that all he said for $20, i dont know if it was sandblasting or chemical dipped.. This was last year tho..

I also had a friend at a body shop sand and match paint my factory Magnum rims and they held up really good..

the powdercoat is the way to go,most powdercoating shops will bake the product before they give it back to the customer
