Rolling Bed Covers
I have a new silver dually somewhere on a train between TX and Denver. Supposed to be here on the 13th. Longest 8 weeks of my life ... outside of basic training!
I want to put a roll up hard cover on the truck and have narrowed it down to the Roll N Lock or the Pace Edwards Full Metal Jack Rabbit. Do any of you have experience with either of these? If so, I would sure like to hear your thoughts - both pros and cons!!!! I don't want to make an expensive mistake.
Originally I had pretty well decided on the RNL, but after looking more at the Jack Rabbit I think I would rather have one that the cannister doesn't go above the bed.
2nd question would be color matched Linex bed liners. Anyone done the color match and how well does it hold up? I know they have the new Xtra coming, but probably won't wait for that.
Thanks

Do a search on this subject. I remeber seeing alot of people with alot of comments on these rolling covers. One guy I know said that they are horrible in the winter, if a little bit of water or snow gets in somewhere and freezes, he cant open his cover. I also saw a few comments on how they are not completely waterproof either, so anything in your bed might get wet.
I have the Fold-A-cover on mine, I like it and hate it at the same time!!
In the Summer, the black just ABSORBS the heat, and you cant even touch the darn thing without burning your fingertips, and I had trouble in the winter with built up ice in all the places where it folded and stuff. Had some troube at times opening it.
If I had all my money back, I might of went with a cap, I do like how these trucks look in regular pick-up form, but as far as ease of operation, I would might of went with a cap, If I knew how my cover would act in different climates. Good luck with your decision.

So whatever I do is a compromise. On the foldups, can you just foldup 2 back sections and leave the other two down? If you do that how do you secure the 2 that you've folded up?

Alot of guys pulling 5th wheelers use the Fold-A-covers. On my shortbed, you can just fold up the section near the tail gate. Than you can take that section, and the other two foldable sections, and fold them on the section that is closest to the rear window. All sections will lay ontop near your rear window, and the cover has two built in "snap straps" and you snap these straps to secure the section from bouncing up. I also think theres a few pics on here, with 5th wheelers hooked up, and it shows how the Fold-a-cover works. If you can find any, Im sure someone with a 5ver, can snap a few shots for ya.

Extang
All I have the Extang RT. It is not a hard cover but it works well and with the integrated support bars it rolls up and out of the way in seconds. A co-worker has the Pace Edwards Roll top and he likes it. The Pace Edwards has Weather-resistant padded polymer laminated to rigid aluminum panels that glide smoothly along black powder-coated side rails. The folding and rolling aluminum units do freeze. I know a few people that have had problems with them in the NY winters.
Just my $.02

Roll N Lock !
I have the RNL and it has been very good to date. I have owned it since 2 summers ago. I was kind of worried about having it in the cold Canadian winters but it worked slick. All i do with mines is after washing the truck i take a good silicone lube and spray the rails and it still works perfect. I had my choice out of the Pace ot the RNL and i just thought the RNL was a little better built than the Pace. I use it alot in the winter for keeping sledding gear dry and out of the road salt and slop. JMO

I just sold my 2001 3500 i had a ROLLNLOCK cover on it for 5 years worked good . Only thING i did not likr about it was that once a month you needed to put vinyl protectant on it to keep it looking good. I have a 06 3500 coming i am going to try a RETRAX a couple of my friends are useing them i like fte finsh on the cover better.

He said the Pace sometimes has trouble with opening/closing, the RNL has to be treated to keep it looking nice, but the Retrax always looks nice. That was the 1st I had heard about Retrax.
Thanks everyone for you comments. Looks like any of the 3 will work for me and not be a "bad" buy. They are expensive enough you sure don't want to mess up!!
I've had the PE JackRabbit for a year now and it works as advertised, no problems with the sliding mechanism. It keeps contents in the bed secure and dry. I also got the Explorer rails and load bars so I can carry bikes, cargo boxes and other stuff above the tonneau. The only think I'm not thrilled about is the space that the cannister takes up at the front of the bed, but it's not a real big deal. If I had it to do over again, I'd probably give more serious thought to the Fold-A-Cover only because there's no cannister taking up space at the front of the bed. But, I REALLY like the Explorer rails on the PE. I wish other tonneau manufacturers would offer this same feature.
No problems with my Retrax going on a couple of years now.....so far so good.
I would shop the price out then give Retrax Corp. a call and see if they will match the price....at least that's how it worked for me.

I had a Pace Edwards on a previous truck for 2 1/2 yrs in Canadian Winters and loved it and didn't have any problems with snow/ice and I parked outside all the time. The only little thing I didn't like was losing that 6-7 inches at the front of the bed because it makes a bit of a difference with a short box but if I was going to get any sort of hard cover or folding tonneau I would definitely go with it again.
I drove up to a dealer in Denver today that handles all 3 (Roll N Lock, Pace Edwards, and Retrax). Decided on the Retrax.
So now I have a bed cover and the only other thing I need is a truck! On a very slow train from TX but supposed to be here next week (I hope).
Thanks for all your inputs, I really do appreciate it!!

I'm going through the same decisions right now. My 03 has the RNL on it, and the down fall to me is the leaking - I'd prefer something that sealed up a little better. I SHOULD probably consider keeping the one I have, but the buyer of my truck really wants it (and has offered to pay more for it), and I'm a little concerned about what the truck looks like underneath the rails and such.
I'm almost considering going to one of the cheaper velcro style soft covers. The price is attractive, as is the full width of the bed again. THe side rails of the RNL are VERY flimsy - I'm really suprised that I havent damaged them so far.
