Replaced factory sound system - WHAT A DIFFERENCE!

My 2006 3500 came with the low-end factory system - two 6x9's in front and two 5.5's in the back, plus an AM/FM/CD player. The sound was awful - just awful. All bass and nothing else. I sounded like a pimpmobile's "thumpa thumpa" even when playing classical [grin].

I first replaced the speakers with Polks all around. That helped a bunch, but the midrange was still missing and the sound was "hollow". So yesterday I replaced the head unit with an Alpine deck.

Wow. The difference is hard to describe. I've worked with professional audio most of my life and this is the first system that's so good I could listen to it without adjusting the EQ at all.

If you're still suffering with your factory sound system, junk it and pony up the ~$700 necessary to buy a good set of components. My list appears below, though you might prefer something else. I especially recommend these specific Polk speakers because 1) they fit, 2) they're marine rated (so they'll take moisture and other abuse better), and 3) they sound great.

Front: Polk db690's
Rear: Polk db650's
Deck: Alpine CDA9855

Good sound is too important to me. If I'm driving alone the sound system is on 95% of the time, and poor quality audio is just unbearable. No reason to spend the thousands that some people do, though. Seriously, this entire setup cost me under $700 in components, used all of the factory wiring harnesses, and looks and sounds fantastic. WELL worth the money in my opinion.

I'm the same way. I drive to much to have a crappy sound system. I did polk momo front components with an alpine amp on them, alpine head unit, and 2 audiobahn 12" subs. Life is good now.

You are a little vague on what you installed. Be more specific for others who might wonder what you put in. Did you install high end Polk speakers such as DB6500's and what deck did you install the 150.00 alpine 9827 or what. Just be more specific.

I myself have everything set up already using Infinity Kappa 6x9's up front and Polk DB6500s in the rear powered by an Alpine 75x4 V12 and the Deck is an Alpine 9855. Oh subs, custom box two 10" MTX Thunder 7000's that you can't even find anymore, **** those are good speakers, wish they still made them, hooked up in mono to 500 watt V12 alpine. NOW THAT SOUNDS GOOD!!!!

For anyone else who wants to try to fit the Infinity Kappa 6x9's up front you do have to do some weaseling to get them to fit, but it is worth it.

I will admit that the factory sound system is fair at best. Interesting I purchased a Mopar badged CD 6 disk changer for my early 03 with what was then the top of the line sound system for the package I ordered. Ironically when I when to my local sound shop for additional CD magazines what they sold me were magazines for a Alpine changer. I realize that Alpine has high end and low end components but is the $700.00 upgrade really that good?

Rockittboy, I love the SATO BANZAIS, go to there website, www.satoracing.com and you can here a clip of how they sound. They are unbelieveable. You can't go wrong with the RC51, best sport bike I have ever owned. Every time I ride it a huge grin is on my face when I am done.

Ask the other posters on this thread - the data has been there. Think of it as a spec sheet, and perhaps it will suddenly become visible to you [grin].

CAN you edit posts here? I didn't know that.

Ah! I see the little edit button now. I added this line using it. Handy!

[Thread hijack]

My wife has a 2000 Durango that only has 48K miles which she refuses to trade. Unfortunately, the speakers have seen too many Houston summers and the cones are breaking up. Since I really can't see paying for replacement speakers at the dealer, does anyone know if the Polk speakers mentioned above will replace the Durango speakers, and are they compatable with the Infinity head in the Durango (didn't the Infinity head use amps on the speakers?)

The >4 speaker Infinity systems use (at least) bi-amping, where the speakers in the doors are treated like subwoofers and only get the low frequencies. You'll have to bypass the amp if you want to use full range speakers in the doors.

As for what will fit, go to this site:

http://www.crutchfield.com

...and use their little "What fits?" thingie to get a list of the products they carry that will fit your Durango. Obviously it won't tell you about products that will fit that they DON'T carry, but it's a good starting place.
