hello all! i have a lil delemma i need an opinion on.i had a viper 791xv remote start/alarm installed on truck yesterday.now the 791xv has a glow plug input and a timed start delay on it .i specificly told the installer to hook up the glow plug light .my problem is the thing starts too early (befor light goes out) i called the installer today he told me that he just has to set the time longer.now that tells me he didnt hook up the glow plug wire.now hers my question i thought that when you start up the truck you wait for the light to go out (as i always do) now what ive herd is if you let the light go out then wait let say approx 15 seconds that you should re cycle the start up meaning turn off then back to wait to start .in other words do the plugs lose there chsrge when you wait too long after the light goes out. i ask this because this my first deisel truck and im real anul when come to my stuff especially when it come to my truck

 

you should have heat shilds not glow plugs, and they should be fine from what I read. I think the glow plugs are only on the fords and older dodges.

 

You have what is called a grid heater. It warms up the air in the intake that is then sucked into the motor when it starts. If it is cold and you leave it sit long enough after the grid heater is turned off the air that was warmed by it will cool back down.

So yes the best time to start it is right when the grid heater turns off, that is when the air is at the best temperature.

Bottom line is take it back to the installer and tell him to wire it into the wait to start light like it was suppose to be to start with.

 

As far as I know you need to hook up a timer relay to the Wait to start wire on the alarm module, not to any wire on the truck. Then you can set the delay as long as you want. You can't tie into the wait to start wire on new Dodges. The alarm shop should know this. They should sell you an alarm that has a built in timer, I made the same mistake.

 

If they are telling you that they just don't want to do it. They can be hooked into the wait to start light, they may have to use a relay to isolate it from the wait to start curicut but it can be done. My Compustar is hooked up this way and they had no problem doing it, NO timers involved at all.

 

gatf4 is not the only guy that has heard you can not tie into the WTS light on the newer trucks. I am not saying your Compustar is not hooked up that way just that a lot of people have stated you can not tie into the WTS light itself on the newer units.

Now as far as irocin350's truck I do not know... his sig is not filled in at the time of this post.

 

I was told on a website called www.The12volt.com that the BCM or ECM only talks to the Dash cluster through a PCI buss using a digital signal to control the wait to start light, so there is no wire to tap into. I've read that you can remove the whole cluster and try and tap into the inside circuit board where the Wait to start light actually is. That sounds really complicated compared to installing a $20 timer.

 

when i had mine installed i was told the same thing. You cant tap the wait to start wire. Mine has an adjustable timer on it. The longest the grid heater cycles for is 10 seconds. set the timer accordingly and your good to go

The grid heater will stay on for alot longer then 10 sec when it is cold, 20-30 here in WI.

I don't know what to tell you guys, maybe things have changed on the 04 and ups, but my 03 is for sure hooked into it.

How about this. I asumer that the wait to start is just a 12volt trigger. Why couldn't you just hook direct into the power at the grid heater, when the heater goes out it would start. Or their is the relay by the battery that send juice to the grid that could be hooked into.

 

Just had mine done and the wait to start has a feed back that will light up the the light using the remote start. The instuctions say to go to the grid heater not the start light. This is for my 05 and my 99 was the same. It took 3 tries to get rid of the feedback on the 99. The cure was going to the grids. Why would anyone want some clown pulling their cluster[busting clips etc] when all you need is a wire to the grids?

 

So would Circuit City or Best Buy car audio/alarm installers have any idea what you guys are talking about? Most of them (where I live) are high schoolers working for extra money. What is a reputable company here in FL.

I know I don't really need one...boys and there toys.

I'm a directed installer and that is correct. The wire cannot be tapped into. A timer module must be used. I had to do the same thing to my 05.

 

Jmac, I don't want to trash anyone....but.....I know the guys in blue shirts on this side of the Americas don't know squat about installing on diesels!!!!

Now, I do understand that "people" install these and you could very well find a really good installer at one of those places but I would say you got a better chance of winning the PowerBall with the following numbers

PS...anyone wins with those numbers I want in...

 

Then explain why mine works perfectly with NO timmer. I still say tap into the relay that triggers the grid heater, forget the light itself.
