Remote Starter

I went out and Bought the Remote Starter and alarm. Its the Viper 771xv. Is anyone else running one of these? Do you have any issues with it. I got it a best buy (X-mas gift cards) And I plan on having them install it since it looks way to complicated to do myself. Thx Dave

My alarm/audio guy says DEI (Viper, Python, Clifford) are the only way to go. Mine gets installed on Monday and I can't wait (new model with 2-way paging and 1 mile range!).

I would definitely have them install it because you have to use all kinds of resistors and crap on just about every single wire you hook up...total nightmare. Maybe that's just on the 2006's though since they use the CAN-BUS system.

I Have a 771 on my 02 and i dont have any complaints about it. The previous owner bought it, but it is my understanding that you have to have them install it or it will void a warranty. the alarm works really good, sometimes too good, as the septic truck pumping out the neighbors tank set it off! It seems safe, i dont worry about theft even when its running and im not around. it has a lot of cool features, some of which i havent even figured out yet. PM if you wanna know more or if you discover something you want to share!

My CompuStar had a minimum of 45 wire to hook up, no I did not install it. Youre gonna love having it though.

So you are getting the one below. The kid at Best Buy had no clue. He told me the only difference between my alarm and the one below is the fancy remote so I passed. But now that I look online. Mine has a 1/4 mile range and the one below has a mile range. I may go back and get the other one. It was 100 more but I would rather have the stronger signal since I park my down under the building and the concrete may mess with the signal

I'm getting the Python version of that model. Here's a link: http://www.pythoncarsecurity.com/products/990.html

I would definitely opt for the 1 mile range if you can. Can never hurt to have the extra and never know when it might come in handy. How much did Best Buy quote you to install it?

The install is 150 and that includes some install kit they have to use for it. They claim the install kit 99. So the install is 50. Sound right

Whats the difference between the 2?

I wonder how that remote start works when you have to use the pre-heater in cold weather if you forgot to plug it in ? And do the doors stay locked if someone wanted to steal it when it's sitting there running unattended. Or if they do lock and someone broke the window and jumped in to take off, could you disable it with the remote from the house before it got to far down the road, out of the range of the remote and long gone ?

The keys are not in the vehicle so you could not turn the wheel. You can not put in gear since the keys are not in it and you have to touch the brake pedal to engage drive. The Remote starter has a safety kill that once you touch the brake pedal the truck shuts off unless the key is in the run position.

As for the pre heat the remote starter has a 15 second delay on diesels. So the wait to start light goes off after 13 seconds

Hope this helps

The "install kit" they're talking about is the security bypass module but since you have the black key there isn't a security system, however it does control the door locks and dome light. Don't believe the "Range" claims. You'll be lucky if it works 100yds away. Your not going to be able to transmit a radio signal that far with a watch battery. I've probably installed 100 or so alarms, starters and none have had anything close to the range the mfg claimed regardless of brand.

Most starters have a delay timer just for diesels. They all come with a "Glow Plug" or "Diesel Input" wire but the dodge doesn't have anywhere to hook it to so using the timer is your only option. The doors will lock when started (if they're not already, as long as they are hooked up). It isn't any easier to steal a truck with a remote starter since the steering wheel is still locked, and the remote starter is hooked to the brake wire so when you press the pedal to put in in drive it dies. All of which can be bypassed EASILY if the crook desires, nothing is impossible.

I have a Viper 5900 and have installed a couple of other Vipers and they are very nice units. Have to agree though, the range isn't what they claim.

The Rams with the black key are easy. Ones with a grey key can be tough as sometimes it takes alot to program the bypass. The only thing that would take more time on a ram is it has multiple acc, ign and starter outputs. These all need to be powered exept one and they have to be isolated with relays or you can start a nice warm glow! We install probably 250-300 starters every winter.
