Reliable 450-500hp. What are my best options including tranny upgrades??
This is kind of a broad question. I currently have a Turbo back 4 inch MBRP exhaust, AFE stage 2 intake and 100 hp Diablo tune. I am definitely hooking up gauges within the next couple of weeks since I have no idea of my EGT's or anything (I've been taking it easy on the truck). I am looking for 450-500 reliable hp and no more than 1000 ft-lb. I tow a boat that with the trailer and gear probably weighs 6500-7500lbs. That is the heaviest I tow. I want to keep the stock turbo for now, but will probably upgrade in a year. What is my best route for reliable hp? I was thinking 50 hp sticks, intake horn, another 50hp extra on the diablo tune, and maybe the Bag of parts CP3 uprade. I am not sure if i would have to upgrade the lift pump or not (anyone know??) I know my EGT's might be high without a bigger turbo. should i run the water/methanol injection and get away with it for now? what is an acceptable EGT while pulling vs performance 1/4 mile run?
For the tranny, I have heard you can get away with a converter and a valvebody for less than 500hp if you don't beat the hell out of it. I wont be doing any 4x4 launches i can tell you that. I do have 3.73 gears with 32 inch tires currently. What converter is best for my situation? Also, should I run a shift kit with a valvebody??? any other parts that I can replace easily while the tranny is out???

You don't need to do most of what you are proposing to make 450-500hp. A Smarty will probably get you to at least 450. Add an MP8 and you are there for sure.
You don't need a turbo, injectors or cp3 upgrades to get to that hp level. But you do need extra filtration to save your injectors...........so i'd invest in a filter head with a 2 micron CAT filter.
Regarding trans.....they are just a crap shoot when adding extra power. Some can take it a long time and some can't. Alot depends on how much you are going to beat on it. If you are hard on them, then i'd spring the cash and get a full build from Goerends or DTT with billet shafts. If you are easy on it....just run it stock a while...and start saving for valve body and torque converter upgrades.

What about the stock lift pump, what hp is it reliable to?
Jeff
i've got 455rwhp with stock tranny and stock pump for over 50k miles now. You can just get a airdog for 499, if your tranny is in relative good shape just a convertor and valve body, smarty, or hell smarty jr and mp8.

I agree with Tex as far as upgrades, a Smarty (NOT JR) or Bully Dog running Crazy Larry will get you into the 450 HP range, adding a pressure box like an MP8 or Quad X2 should get you around 500, Ill be able to tell you Saturday night.
I got 443 with CL which drew my fuel pressure down to zero, so you'll need a lift pump upgrade. The X2 is on sale now at this site for half price, that will add 140 HP and when you add the Smarty or BDTD you can download a stack tune and use it for pressure only and should be in the 500 HP range. The X2 is great cuz it's under 300 bucks right now and comes with a rail pressure gauge.
Get some gauges first, change the muffler to a free flowing one like my Nelson and open up the air intake, and your tranny will need costly upgrades.

Ive got the edge with attitude,a cfm intake horn, s and b air intake, im about to put 90hp nozzles on and I have a 4 inch strait out the back. What should I do next and please explain what it does. Like what is the x2? Please let me know. thanks
Jeff.....Here is a link on one possible place to buy a filter head and filter.

Our Common Rail Diesel trucks put out a tremendous amount of rail pressure. Like 25,000 psi. It would kill you if it was aimed at you. That is a tremendous amount of pressure going to your injectors. It is also what makes the CR trucks very powerful too. Anyway, any debris that gets in your fuel will erode on your injectors over time. So it is important to filter your fuel as clean as possible. I run a stock filter in the stock filter housing and then the fuel goes on to a 2 micron CAT filter and then to the CP3 injection pump. I've had great luck with that set up for 60+ thousand miles and im at 120K on my original injectors, pump etc.
Your stock fuel filter im gonna guess is good to about 450hp. Beyond that you will prob need an aftermarket pump. I like the Walbro personally. Simple, reliable, quiet, relatively inexpensive and easily replaced if needed.

I'm not sure but 90HP injectors might be a little hard on your stock Cp3, you might need to upgrade it, I think a rail gauge would be a good idea running them.
TEX, where's a good place to mount that 2 micron on my 06, any idea? (When I click on it I get nothing but might be cuz I'm at work)
I mounted mine right on the frame below the driver door. Convenient to get to yet out of the way. Sorry I don't have better pics but you can get the idea on loc.

Thanks Tex, will hafts put one in one day.
Would like to plumb my fual from the AD to the stock canister for the water seperation, then to a 2 micron on the way to the CP3.

Does that X2 come with the race program or does that costs you extra if you buy it from the dtr store. I looked on quadzilla website and it looks like its an extra 80.00 for the race tune.
hey Fisherguy. Keep me posted on how you like the smarty/X2 stack. I am really tempted to buy one just cause of the good price. My goal in the long run is to get the smarty and it would be great to not waste my money right now on something that wont stack good with it. Thanks

The upgrade to the 140HP module is 80 bucks but the link above to the DTR store IS for the 140 HP unit so you won't need to upgrade it. The other ones are only 100 HP I think.
Just got back from the Dyno, on the BD Mustang I got 496.8 HP, estimated 1167 lb/ft of torque.
BTW Honda 99 that was with the Bully Dog running Crazy Larry and the Quadzilla X2 running the stack tune with it cranked to max, first time I've had it that high, wish I coulda seen the gauges when they ran it.
I was hoping for 500 but can live with 496.8!

Thanks for all the replies guys. I think you have given me a good direction on what I am going to do. I am definitely ordering the boost, tranny temp, egt, rail pressure and fuel pressure gauges this week. Going to setup the 2 micron kit as well. Then I am going to put a TC, valve body, 1-2 lever, input shaft, and a laminated flex plate on. this should give me some insurance. After this, I am going to try the Diabo Extreme or extreme rkl tune with maybe a power puck (my truck seems to like the diablo tunes). then the Air dog and 50hp nozzles will come into play. I don't think the stock lift pump will supply that stacked tune. Then eventually a mild turbo upgrade.
Does anyone know if I need a boost fooler???? would it help me now?

Im sorry Fisherguy I didnt read your post that well I guess. Has anyone out there stacked the X2 with the smarty. Ive got a powerpup in my truck right now but i cannot even tell when the thing is turned on or off. My truck is completely stock except for a 5 inch exhaust with a 7 inch tip. I would like to be able to blow a little puff of smoke here and there so thats why I am wanting to get this for now since its so cheap. Then once i save up so money buy gauges, an airdog or fass system and probably a smarty. Thats why Im asking so much if this will stack good with a smarty. Thanks for all the help guys.

If it stacks with the BD it will stack with the Smarty for sure since when stacked you're only adding pressure with it, just like an MP8 or Dr Performance etc..
