Real world towing with WATER/METH?????
Real world towing with WATER/METH?????
Is anyone out there using Water/Meth to cool EGT temps and gain a bit of power for real world towing?
I just returned from a 6500 mile trip and have realized more than ever that my towing ability is limited only by EGT temps and not by HP or Torque. I have plenty of peddle left before it touches the floorboard but just can't use it.
I have researched turbo's and turbo coolers of which the later won't help much. A new turbo will do the job but in the grand skeem of things I don't really need a new turbo, I just need the EGT's to come down so I can use the power I currently have (06 Dodge Cummins, Volant Cold air with Ram, 4" free flow all the way back , Edge Juice box with attitude and jake brake).
The biggest problem I have with adding a turbo is that in almost every case I will have to ditch the Jacobs brake for another style of brake and I truly don't need a new turbo. My current setup with the stock turbo produce plenty of power and torque for the application. I just can't use it all right now because of EGT temps.
With my current setup, towing 12000lbs for a total GCVW of 19K lbs. I am being told by the "snow performance" guys that I will see EGT drops of 200 or more degrees running only 20 percent meth in their stage 3 kit. This,,, "IF" true is truly the answere to my problems??????
IS ANYONE OUT THERE USING THE SNOW PERFORMANCE OR ANY OTHER WATER/METH INJECTION KIT UNDER REAL WORLD TOWING CONDITIONS?
What is the down side, if any? Is Water/Meth injection harmful to my Cummins motor?
Tell me what you know..........

I've had a Snow Stage 2 kit on my truck. Really liked it. It's cheap to keep full although it uses ALOT of juice.
Propane is more expensive and doesn't cool EGT's well at all.
Believe it or not, nitrous is better on headgaskets than meth or propane.
I wouldn't spray anything while towing IMO. If its getting too hot, get a bigger turbo or small set of twins, or back down the fuel.

Anybody else? Just curios how to keep them lower when pulling grades. I have the same problem, I tow with the Smarty on level 5 with bigger turbo and still get hot on steeper grades. I can pretty much hold 75 on most hills if they get real big have to back out because of EGT's. So would a little shot of water/meth help in tthis case if I had it set to come on at 35lbs of boost?

I am not looking for any big gains in HP or Torque. As stated earlier, I have plenty of power for what I am doing, just need cooling. I am not building a race truck, just trying to keep a good tow rig within it's capability without spending an arm and a leg or having to upgrade everything under the sun.
I agree that a turbo would fix the problem but it also creates two big headaches in return. 1) need new throttle body and torque converter 2) need to replace the stock jacobs brake. We are talking a $3000 - $4K fix vs. $900 fix.
I am not looking to run 75% meth or juicing the hell out of my truck for power. My plan would be to run 20% or less meth turned up just enough to give me the cooling I need and my edge juice on program 3 or less.
Anyone doing this for a tow rig?

Spray straight water then......should cool 200 degrees. $900? where are you looking?
900.00 is for the complete stage 3, upgraded bung for temp, and the 8 gal. tank. Not sure I can get it any cheaper?
Mr. Deez (Mr Deez motorsports . com) is a good friend of mine and we live close. I can trust him. Even if I could get a cheaper price for all this I am not sure I would pay it just for the simple fact that I can head down the street if I have any problems with the unit.
After spending over an hour with Snow Performance on the phone this morning all my concerns and questions seem to have been addressed. As it stands It looks like I am going to be running the Stage 3, 8Gal. tank with my Edge Juice either in stage 1 or 2 with a 1-2MPG towing increase and 200degree temp drop with very mild HP and torque gains. This truly meets my goals IF it does what I just stated?
I will let everyone know how it turns out when the project is done.

I paid $500 for my stage 2 kit from Snow.
Snow does have great customer service...they have always answered my questions very well.
Let us know how it goes.
I should have the kit in and working by next weekend. I ordered on Friday so I believe it should be here by Monday or Tuesday. Mr. Deez and I will be working together on these kits. He also has one for his Dodge twin turbo truck that he needs to install so we are going to have a work party at his house all day on Sat. or Sun to get them installed.
I use coolingmist stage II kit... I use it for towing as well as playing... Towing with the water/meth at a 20% meth ratio I will see an average of a 150* temp drop...
Coolingmist's controller can be tied into an EGT probe and base injection on temperature instead of boost if desired..

My buddy tows with a 6 speed 06 dodge with twins, edge juice turned up to 5with a 14k lb trailer and he is only looking at temps around 1150 max running 65-75 up 6% grades.
Twins seem to really get the job done, unfortunately they kill automatic transmissions really quick unless you dump a but load of money into a trans. After bucking up for twins, who wants to shell out more money for a trans???
My goal is to run my Edge Juice on 1 or 2 with my stock turbo and use the stage 3 Snow water/meth injection at 20% meth with my 12K lb. trailer and run 65-70mph up any 6-8% grade and not exceed 1250EGT? According to all I know at this point aside from actually testing the system this should be a very likely and achievable goal.
At this stage of the game I can just hold 60mph with EGT's bouncing between 1200-1300 up 6% grades depending on wind and elevation. If I can obtain my goal with the water/meth injection I will be completely satisfied with my current setup.
I don't race my truck nor do I sled pull. My rig is a daily driver and tow rig. I don't see myself using the water/meth under any other scenerio than towing. With my Edge Juice on 1 or 2 program and the water/meth at 20%, my hope is that I can get average mileage out of my stock transmission (70K for a tow rig).
