Just curious what normal rail pressure readings should be? idling reading and WOT reading. (on a 305/555 engine)

Also, how does a smarty affect either of these two readings? (idling and WOT).

Who makes the best gauge?

Smarty affects rail pressure by draining it.

Otherwise, only the beta 4.2-4.4 files play with pressure.

Best gauge is more a function of what you like. Among the major mfgs. there is not enough difference in quality or functionality to argue about. The electronic digital (vs mechanical) gauges I think are easiest to install though.

Rail pressure on an 03 at idle is about 5200-5500, the Smarty affects the rail pressure by bringing it up much sooner than stock programming. THe rail pressure will not be raised much if any, but it will bring it up much sooner in the rpm range. Depending on the smarty version, max rail pressure will vary from 21000-24500psi.

Thanks guys, just what I was looking for. DRB scanner showed 5500 psi idling (didn't know what was normal).

Looking for a gauge to install next...

I think they all install the same and take readings pretty much the same. You really just need to decide how much $ you want to spend and if you would rather have analog or a digital read out.

It's a little high, but I run a Dipricol Optix Rail gauge in my truck. Matches the factory gauges, and (personal preference) I like looking at a needle.
