racing an automatic

Ok guys, just wanted some advice about lining up with an automatic. Should I put in 4 high or what. What gear should I start off in. Im not planning on doing this but want to be ready when the time is right. We have a bunch of automatics running around here that are modified. I was thinking maybe start off in 3rd gear and pop the heck out of the clutch. Anyways just wondering and thanks for any info.

Justin

Not a good idea on a stock clutch...it will be toasted in no time.

Here is a video of a auto running in the 1/8 mile.

Yes 4 wheel start with 10lbs of boost.. If you have billet shafts go up to 15-18lbs.

I dont think you'll have any luck launching in third with the stock clutch. If you had an upgraded clutch launch in third and keep the skinny pedal on the floor as you shift through the rest of the gears you'll do fine. Not sure if you can beat em with a stock clutch unless you can get to them to race from a thirty mph roll. Good luck man.

So with the auto tranny are you supposed to start in 4 hi and then change to 2WD later on? When are you supposed to go back to 2WD? Basically, how should i be dragging with my auto?

With a stock or close-to-stock truck you can usually get away with launching in 2wd with about 3psi of boost to help eliminate some of the turbo lag.

If you try that and find the tires spin way too much, then you need to launch in 4wd. With a stock tranny you can easily break a shaft if you build too much boost in 4wd though. I think most say if you keep it around 5-8psi with under 450hp you should be ok.

If you shift out of 4wd under power it still won't disengage until you let off the throttle, so there's really no difference either way.

If the 4wd doesnt disengage then how are all these people getting to 100+ mph on the 1/4 mile? Doesn't 4wd end at like 65mph or so?

Justin, w/ your mods and no clutch, your going to be upset. First because you will get beat by a mildly modded auto, second of all you might be kissing your stock clutch goodbye........toast! Handshakers aint for drag racing unless your really good and heavily modded in the tranny dept.
