My uncle doesn't do the internet thing and had asked me if I knew of a quiet 4 inch system for his 04 2wd 305 hp quad cab.He had ordered a Volant and was putting it on and found out it would not fit and then they told him they didn't make one for his truck.He said his head pipe is around 3 5/8 inch.I am not sure what his has I would guess a 3 1/2 inch but any help would be appreciated.And he wants it quiet.

well, my cat fell off along with the stock muffler and I replaced with 2 flow through mufflers v e r y quiet.

 

Any free flow muffler he puts on will be louder than stock, exspecially 24" ones. His exhaust is 3.5" from exhaust elbow to front of muffler and 4" back to tail pipe. If he wants 4" exhaust all the way he will need to get an exhaust system turbo back and replace the cast elbow for true 4". The cast elbow on a 305/555 is 4" at turbo neck down to 3.5" at down pipe. Stick with a longer muffler and it will be quieter.

 

My donaldson 51" muffler sounds pretty close to stock. Outside the truck it is a little louder, but inside it sounds quieter. Donaldson makes another 51" thats quieter then mine.

 

It's not worth changing the downpipe from the 3.5" unless he does a lot of engine mods. I put on a 51" Nelson when my engine was stock and it was slightly louder but it sounded like a trashcan so I stuffed the chambers with FG insulation and wrapped more around the outside. Then it was every bit as quiet as stock til I changed turbos. Then I got the drone thing and I put a resonator right behind the DP. It stopped the drone but it's still a little loud in the cab.
