Question about performance chips.....

I dunno if this is an ignorant question or not.....so here goes anyways!

With all the recent concerns/questions about the new 600's miles per gallon, or lack there of by many people....it got me wondering:

Why doesn't an aftermarket chip manufacturer make a chip that will lower the HP/Torque to get the driver better mileage? Like a 3-4 step chip that say on step 1, is a MPG step to get much better mileage at reduced HP/Torque. 2 would be stock settings with tweaks, 3 & 4 would be boosts to HP/Torque.

Seriously, how many of you out there drive your CTD as a daily driver, and have no need to 325 HP/600ft trq....? Where you would get by just fine with say 275/500 for grocery geting etc if you got a much better MPG for the loss of HP/torque.

Am I just dumb as a rock for wondering this? It seems like it would be physicaly possible to do......so.....my question is, why does no one do it for the Dodge 600 CTD, or for any of the big 3 diesels?

Anyone care to school me on this matter or to validate my reasoning?

System overload. "Lower HP and Torque." Does not compute.

I've gotta hand it to you....I think you're the first person on this board to EVER suggest LOWERING HP and torque numbers.

I look at it this way. If I can afford a $33K truck then I can probably afford to feed it's 18 city mpg appetite.

How about we trade trucks?? I've got an '03 SO which you can bomb for when you want big HP/Torque and still have the SO engine for when you want fuel milage!

I don't recall hard numbers, but I think any box that adds power will actually increase fuel mileage appoximately 1.5mpg. I'm not sure if reducing power would really help since you'd have less power to move around the same weight. Just a thought.

Yeah...but that only works if you drive normally. The Edge EZ is SUPPOSED to increase fuel mileage by as much as 10% if you continue to drive in the same manner you did before....but who does that??

Thanks for the replies guys.

So taking all the above into consideration, then why doesn't someone make a chip that has a MPG seting (only thing it does it get you better MPG) and then like 2-3 additional power levels? Hehe am I pipe dreaming here?

And to answer Hoss, yes, I can afford the diesel fuel (cheaper than the stinking gas!!! gah!!! ) but every little bit helps, plus it the longer between fill ups while on the road the better!

Hehe I dare someone here to tell me they wouldnt get all excited about a chip that could help you get 20-25 MPG on the highway! (just tossin #'s hehe)

Thanks again for the feedback!

I hear you. I was just giving the standard reply that most folks around here give when someone complains about anything being expensive.

The closest thing to a MPG only setting is setting 1 on the TST CR box. Setting one is timing only with no extra fuel added. This should be good for some good hp just from the timing alone with no extra fuel and better fuel economy. TST is also working on the multiple injections on the 600. There are a total of 4 injection events. TST is working on trying to manipulate these events to get better milage from the 600's. One thing is though is that Cummins says that the 2 extra events don't occur during cruising conditions. TST is definantly working on it though.

Come on TST...I need you!!! I can afford a truck like this but it ain't no good seeing my fuel bill double just to have 20 extra hp. Oh and with 3 trips to the dealer, they say there is nothing wrong with it and 12/13 mpg is normal. That is why I bought a Toyota to go back and forth to work...so I can keep this fuel guzzler parked...makes a lot of sense....

Oh....I forgot another reason I am burning so much fuel is so that I will leave the air much cleaner for everyone.

If emissions were measured by mile my 03 would be cleaner than all your fancy emission 600's. I get 20 almost every fillup on mostly freeway driving.

Brules,

The thing to look for is a timing only box (preferably with boost fooling too). Right now i do not know of such a box except the tst on 1 or something along those lines. However quad told me a month or two ago they were working on a box as described above and were hoping to have it out some time soon. I know i would be interested in one.

Quad feel free to chime in here >....
