Question Question

I went down to Torklift and had my new SuperHitch and camper tiedowns installed and on the way home, stopped at Cummins Northwest in Tukwila, WA to find out how much it would be to install a Jacobs Exhaust Brake on my rig. They didn't have an answer for me.

In all, I had three guys come out and look at my rig, and then they told me that they had never installed one on a Cummins powered Dodge before, so this would be a learning curve for them also.

The questions I have is; Who on this forum has installed their own Jacobs Exhaust brake? and how much of a pain was it?

One thing I did understand from Cummins is that my engine does not have a vacuum pump and so one would have to be installed to operate the brake. In looking at the information at Cummins, it looks like, since my rig has A/C, I do not need to have the different serpentine belt, I can use the belt that is already on the engine. Is that correct?

I guess I am wondering if this is something that I can tackle on my own. I am fairly handy with tools.

Also, if I install it myself, will that void my warranty, since the warranty states, to the affect, "anything sold and installed by Cummins or Dodge will be covered by the warranty".

Thanks in advance for any help.

If you are looking to install the jacobs brake you can get them at your local dodge dealer. The kit includes everthing that you need to install including the vaccuum pump that you will need to run the brake. We are in burlington if you are interested PM me and I will let you know a price. As far as installing yourself the part will still be warranted just not the labor that you invest in installing it. It also looks pretty straight forward as installing and I've seen plenty of guys on this site that have done it themselves as well. Good luck.

Thanks, Travist.

I guess what worries me the most is that neither my local 5 Star Dodge dealer nor Cummins Northwest have installed a Jacobs Exhaust brake on a Dodge truck with the Cummins engine. Cummins did say that they would work with me on the installation price since it would be a learning experience for them, and "We don't charge for learning experience".

Hey, maybe I could install it on my truck, get the learning curve out of the way, and then go to work for Cummins installing them on other Dodge trucks.

Check your PM Travist.

We are also a Five Star dealer and we have installed a few of these in the past. Not much of a big deal to install from what my techs have told me. Thanks for the PM. Ya ours is a little more but we are selling them for $1250.00 and not the $1325.00 so it's a little savings.
