Pusher pump question

Hello
I am getting ready to hook up a Holly Blue fuel pump on my wife's 04 stock execpt for a Edge ez and a AFE air filter.
I have been reading and talking about the need for a improved fuel pump for a while now. Afella I work with installed a Bulldog box on his 03 2500 and when he getts on it the fuel psi drops to ZERO . He is getting ready to put on a pusher pump. The box he has is more aggresive than the EZ on my truck.
Zero is never a good number, unless it is a intrest rate.

Here is my question.
The Holly Blue is rated at 14psi and 110 gph. This is the pump I am thinking about installing near the fuel tank on a bed support bracket ( kinda like the FASS I have on my 01) That way the pump only sucks a few feet instead of about 6/8 feet. I figure on running -6 fuel line and bypass the stock transfer pump and go into the fuel filter. Then out the filter with -6 and into the CP3 pump.
Here is my thoughts. Keep in mind that I do not have a fancy paper hanging on my wall. I do have many years experience in the school of hard knocks and hope to have many more. This comment has not intended to offend anyone, but if it did, please get over it .

The stock fuel system is suppose to have 7/8 psi on a pure bone stock truck. The Holly blue is rated at 14 psi. with plenty of flow, if this truck burns 110 gallons of fuel in an hour, I will have more things to figure out than this little problem.
I do not think I need to run the fuel through the stock transfer pump. I am thinking that this would tend to be a restriction in the flow of fuel?? Thoughts?
I am throwing this out there to see what other folks have done.
The other option that I have is forget the Holly blue and buy another FASS and install it on this truck. Thoughts on that to??

I'm trying to get Leigh's truck ready for when she gets home from Iraq next year.

Thanks for your help on my new delema.
Take care

See Ya
Chris

I am just finishing up testing my 3rd gen fuel system and I have the Holley Blue.
I tried mounting it at the back by the tank and loss amperage in the lines to work the pump properly compared to the reading I got where it is now.
I mounted it with my custom frame mount that uses the tie down hole on the frame.
I ran the factory 3/8" soft line onto a 3/8" push lock. I then came out at 1/2" to my custom adapter that bolts in place of the factory weak pump.

I also replaced the hardline to the CP3 and I have a tapped metric adapter at the CP3.

I have wanted to test this system just a bit longer as I am running an Edge EZ...old 6 level and it can pull the fuel pressure down to 7 at WOT and I cruise at 12 and idle at 15.
Originally I was running lower pressures and found a small leak at the guage.
I am going to change out to an isolator.

So far so good with the Holley but as I put more power to it I will see if its up to the task of maintaining what I feel is safe fuel pressure. If I can pull this down to 5 or lower...I am not going to use the Holley Blue.

So far so good.

On your amperage drop. Did you using a relay? I am figuring on letting the pump wire trigger the relay and run either 10/12 gauge wire from the bat to the relay to the pump? Dose that make sense??
Did you plumb in the pressure regulator?? If so where did you run it to?
Thanks for the information.
I am on the way to get about 350/400 hp outa Leigh Ann's truck. After this I will be improveing the slush box that Dodge calls a auto transmission. This will take me some time to learn about this new truck.
Take care
See Ya

hey papasmurf, if ya hadn't heard from john p yet I'm on my 4th holley blue pump. They just don't hold up running them into the cp3. Others have had good luck but mine crap. It seems if you run -6 line from the tank to the cp3 your pressure holds better when getting into it. I'm gonna keep running mine this way til somebody comes out with a reliable pusher pump system. Awaiting Scotty's new system!!!

Hey Scotty,

Any idea when we will be able to purchase your custom adapter? I have a FASS that has been sitting on the workbench for almost a month now waiting on it so I can keep the factory filter/heater.

Have you given much thought to making this adapter available by itself or only as part of the MAX Flow kit?

Thanks.

Shawn:

You have had more trouble with the Holley Blue
Pumps than anyone I know! Just "for the record"
my son Johnner (banshee) has run his Holley Blue
Pump on his 2003 Dodge CTD CR running the same
set-up as you, with the same fueling boxes AND
Scheid Twin Turbos puttting down 556 RWHP and
he has not had ONE problem in almost nine months
of darn hard use!! Go figure.........................
Anyway,.......we will get that Holley Red on yours
or that "redone" PE 4200 of mine and see how
they do.

Sorry for all your problems.

Hi Guys...I have been busy getting stuff done here...

Papa, I never bothered with a relay or the regulator and now with several thousand miles on it...all is well.

I know theres been some dud Holley Blues and Black out there.
CTDKLONE got one a few weeks back.
I think there was a shoddy batch of pumps released.

I have to honor the orders for the Scotty Max Flow before I can look at selling the adapter seperate. I have to get the back orders done, then I will see where I am at.
I should have an answer in about one week.

Scotty

Thanks Scotty
The required fittings did not get here yet, so I will have to wait till I get back from my trip up to Dover to hook the pusher pump in.

I am still looking at installing back by the fuel tank and use a relay to make sure I am giving the pump enough juice to do it's job of feeding the beast.
See Ya

Hello
I finally found the time to install the fuel pressure gauge in our 04 truck. I am seeing 8 psi at idle and when getting up to speed it drops down to about 6/7 psi.
I ran -6 fittings and hose from the fuel filter to the CP3. I am thinking about running the -6 fuel line from the tank to the transfer pump.
I am putting the plans to install the pusher pump on hold I don't think I need it, at least not yet.

See Ya

Hello
I drove our 04 truck to work today and once it finally warmed up I was able to drop the fuel pressure down to 4 psi. I am seeing 10 psi at an idle now, after running the truck for roughly 1/2 hour.

I am posting these numbers just for folks to see what they may have for fuel pressure.
See Ya

Hello
The pump on the fuel filter is the tranfer pump or know also as a lift pump on the older trucks.
When you hear or read "pusher pump" it is refering to a pump mounted between the tranfer/lift pump and the fuel tank and it pushes the fuel to to stock fuel pump, so it was named a pusher pump.
Pumps are more effective/efficient when mounted as close as possible to the tank. Most cars use fuel pumps and are mounted in the gas tank. Why did Dodge/Cummins mount it 6/8 feet away is beyond me.
Hope this helps
See Ya
