Problems with clutch again!!!!! :-(
I bought my first SB dd 3600 back in March of 07, I put about 3000 miles and 7 hooks on it, about the 4th or 5th hook, it was hanging in gear after a hook, well talked to Peter and he shipped me a new one. This was in April of 08, After the first hook, clutch was wanting to stay in first, had to really pull on it to get it out, after 6th hook and 1000 miles, clutch just gave up, slipped somethin crazy. Called Peter and he asked how long I was slipping it coming out of the hole, I told him from 15 to 20', and if the track was really tachy it was sometimes more, well he had a problem with that, said i wasnt coming off the peddle in time, tires need to make one rotation and let it all out!!!, well went for the upgrade and had him send me the 3850 solid plate. Well guess what, yep another problem, this time I have 5 hooks and 950 miles, clutch is starting to bind in gear again, this stuff is getting real old, i spend more time pulling the tranny that i want to, it sucks. I have heard alot of goodthings about SB and Peter, and Im not trying to put him down or his clutchs, i have buddies that have 30,000 and no telling how many hooks, just wondering if some of you have the same problems. Peter cut me a deal on the last one but told me next time its my baby, he has worked with me really well, just wish i would go further then just a few thousand miles.
I have never heard of anyone else having this issue. Have you tried riding the clutch less? That is the single worst thing you can do on a clutch. Did the flywheel have any hot spots on it (Blue spots)? Did you get a new flywheel or have the flywheel machined? I have never pulled one of these manuals apart but, did the flywheel have a step cut the first time you pulled it?

See that just it I dont drive radical, i pull ,and most of the time the truck sits, now there is a buddy of mine that treats his pretty rough! drag racing sled pulling, hid clutch has been in from 1500 miles to almost 36k, I have heard of others havin problem, but it just seems like i git the bad ones, not that they dont put out good clutchs but, im looking into a Kennys?
Maybe you shouldnt slip the clutch as much, like peter said. Every clutch builder says about 90% of the type when someone fries a clutch its b/c of user error, but if your done w/ SBC Id try Haisley I hear their clutchs are top notch.
I think I'm gonna go with a haisley stree drag DD. I've heard theyre awesome for towing, and shift real smooth through the gears like a stocker, and the pedal pressures not too bad plus they hold up to 700hp. For pullers they have a ton of clutches. They have the street puller, then even stouter ones from there
Sounds like you are riding the clutch Corey, of course that can ONLY be a guess on my part as I am not riding in the cab with you.
I would suggest you either try to change your style some or rule out that you do not have a mechanical problem that is not allowing the clutch to fully engage, if you don't then you may never find a clutch that will hold for you......and you sure don't want to be buying clutches forever
Good luck!

I really don't believe that its user error. I have seen Corey pull several times and he doesn't ride his clutch any longer or different than anybody else. I think I would just try a Haisley Street Puller this time or a Kennys Triple Disc, I hear nothing but good about them. Seems like Kman9090 has had really good luck with his Street Puller. Im gonna run one or the other in my 2000 next year.
