Piers 3rd Gen Cam Milage and Dyno Testing

Before releasing a 3rd Gen cam Piers wanted some milage and horsepower testing done. Piers himself did some testing on his truck, but his was tested with twins and he wanted to test it on a truck that still had a stock turbo, and I volunteered to do so. My truck is a Cummins 600 04.5 Tier 3 emmisions engine. For milage testing I made sure I only did tests on long trips at a constant highway speed(70MPH) on the same streach of higway. After the cam install I have gained a solid 2 miles per gallon. I have registered as much as a 3mpg increase but 2mpg or a little over that seems to the average. The reason for the increase in fuel economy, as much of you already know, is that the 04.5 and later engines have a more retarded cam timing than earlier engines. The cam has also increased throttle responce quite a bit. I was expecting a little quicker spoolup on the bottom end, but the cam just seems to let the engine breath better... kind of feels like opening up the exhaust on a regricted gasser. Of course yall know me and i did dyno testing before and after the cam install to see if the torque increased in the upper RPMs like Piers said it would an here is what I got.

Hope I don't have problems with these links, here is the Dyno Coparison of SAE horsepower with the TST box on 3X3 before and after the cam install. Also this is floing through a custom dual air filter intake and 4in exhaust.

Some people don't trust SAE corrected numbers(Like Me), and even though the temperature was almost exactly the same on both days, and this was the same dyno, I have a Dyno Comparison of Uncorrected Horsepower before and after the cam install.

https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...Horsepower.jpg

Also I did a before and after with the TST turned off for a stock reading... I only have the graphs for the SAE corrected though.

I know Piers hasn't ground up a bunch of cams yet and I have know idea of when they will be available. I just wanted to let some people out there know that there is an option to increase the milage on these emmision engines. With diesel prices the way they are I know this will interest some people. I think there was a post a little while back of someone who installed a Schied diesel reground 3rd gen cam. I believe they saw about the same increase in milage, but they didn't do any dyno testing. Anyway if anyone hase an questions simply ask. If anyone would like me to post a link to the torque graphs just let me know... they are really right on top of each other in the lower rpm and the torque increases in the mid and upper rpm range.

The links don't work. That's very intersting though. Did you put duals on your truck? I think I saw you driving around CS a couple of days ago.

Is there any change in EGTs with the addition of this cam?

I wonder if there are gains to be had on the 305/555 engines? You make it sound like not, but???

I have the Scheid Diesel street cam.
It acts just like what Battering Ram stated above.

My first trip with the cam I got 100 miles before the needle moved off of the fuel peg!!

Well I got the pics posted in my members photos so the new links work now.

High Ten, the cruising EGT's have dropped 50-75 degrees. I need to hook up to a load soon and see how well of an EGT reduction there is when towing.

Real Squash, there will be gains with the 3005/555 engines but they will be gains that are more similar to cams that are installed on 24V and old 12V engines. Mostly just EGT, midrange torque, and spoolup.

BigBlue, yes I do have the MBRP Cool Duals on my truck.

I just looked at my service manual, and it looks like it is too much work to R&R the camshaft. I am not sure if I would want to tackle a project like that. If I were to pay someone to install it, it would take along time recoup the cost with the increased mileage.

I am going have to wait a while before I do this upgrage

I paid a buddy of mine to change it.
Had it back in less than 24 hours!

The install really wasn't bad and took about 6 hours of stedy work. Thats not counting the time spent fixing the radiator drain that broke. I gotta thank Chris at Relentless Diesel for letting me use his shop(again). Chris also helped setting the dowel rods that I was a bit nervous about doing, knowing what a disaster dropping a tappet would be. The front of these trucks are actually quite easy to take appart. One thing I did notice is that know one has any idea how friggin huge the fan assembly is on these trucks. The fan probably has three times the surface area of the old ones, and the blades have virtually no space between them. The fan really looks like it should go on the front of a plane.

Well, if I take that time and double, and add 50% (usally an accurate way to estimate how long it takes me to do a job) it will take me 18 hours. I guess I could do that in a weekend.

Did you have to disconnect the A/C lines? Did you use any specality tools, such as 7174-B Crankshaft Bearing tool, engine support fixture special tool #8534, steel bracket/wing nut special tool #8534A? Did you make your own wooden dowels or did you use special dowels designed for this job?

I really want to do this upgrade. The extra mileage will be nice and it shouldn't void the warranty, since the dealership really won't be able to tell that a different camshaft is in there.

Thanks a lot... now the list of projects I'm waiting to do until after my shop is built is one project longer! I'm hoping by next year at this time to actually have a clean dry place to tackle projects like this... am also curious to know what special tools this job required. Also, how many hours did it take Piers to install? I'm wondering what the install cost actually is if you let the pros do it...

Really? Not even with these super futuristic computerized smart engines? I'm always scared to do anything because the dealers around here I've visited aren't very freindly at all.

BTW, if I get this new camshaft, where can I get some roller bearing components and put them in at the same time?

I know what you mean. I also don't have a decent garage at my home, so I have to do all of my work at my parents place, or out at the farm. I also spend weeks working away from home with too much spare time to buy stuff online. When I do finally get time off I am usally too busy doing other stuff to wrench on my truck.

Right now my pile of stuff to install on my truck includes:

Apine head unit, another amp, and alarm
Air Dog, and fuel pressure gauge
Fuel Tank vent kit
Radar dector, and GPS
Brite Box
Recon Clear Cab Lights
Zanios car wax
