P pump for 24V motor
P pump for 24V motor
I am going to do a Cumnins swap in to my 89 Ford and I am just starting to look for a donor truck. I did a search on putting in a p pump and found a post that was saying there was a timing issue that the pump does not change timing .This does not sound right to me .If it works on a 12v it would make sence that it would work on a 24v also . I am not building a race truck I tow with mine and 80 % of the time that is what it is used for. I was concrened about injectors but it sounds like th early 24v with the vp44 pumps, injectors will work they must be the correct pop pressure? Or they could be set to the correct pressure I am sure. The one reason I wold like to go with the 24v is that that truck could come with a 6 speed as I am wanting to bump the HP up to the 300hp range. And Iam concernd about the reliabilty of the 5spd pulling 18,000lbs at the torque levels that a 300hp motor will have. My brother has a 2004 with the same trailer and smokes me on hills.
If you want the older 24v, you might want to post this in the 2nd gen forum here. Otherwise if you get a 3rd gen motor ('03 and up) with the high pressure common rail, the cp3 that comes stock with it is a more than adequate and reliable pump. Depending on what year and model engine you get, it will be 300+hp stock. Even if you get a 250hp motor, it is only a mild program to get over 300.
There's been a couple of threads on here about converting a common rail to a pump. It's pretty expensive and time consuming. Usually it's not a street driven truck, mostly sled pulling.
I knew that there was 2 styles of 24v motors but I did not read good enough I guess that they were not all covered in this section. So the CR motors are different than the non CR 24v? I do not want any electronics that is why I want to go with the p pump.
I think I would rather just have a CR cummins in there...then you can adjust it with a button for when you want more power.....plus if you are converting a 24v to a p-pump is it still going to be reliable??
I say get a 97 12v engine or a CR.....I never want a VP44 on my truck again

dtr member "5.9Excursion" has a thread about installing a CR in his Ford Excursion..pm him maybe he can give you advice on the CR swap??
good luck with your project take some pics and post them here for all to see

heres a guy who makes the p pump conversion http://www.phdperformance.com/conversion.html
I guess you wouldn't be concerned about emptying the rail I guess, but at $4700 you can do a lot of working around THAT
The ad at this site says it's as streetable as any truck, which sounds cool, but seems he might have a slight bias
. Maybe it's real good if as you say you don't want electronics, and also since it's going into a completely different vehicle than a Dodge.
