New Turbo but low boost
New Turbo but low boost
Hey guys,
I got the new SPS 62/14 turbo on today. Everything went great on the install but I'm having trouble building much boost. Here's what I have. As soon as I get into it the truck takes right off but as soon as I hit 30lbs of boost the truck falls flat on its face. It sounds like the waste gate is dumping but I pulled the line off the waste gate acquator and plugged the line and it didn't change anything at all. I had to leave the shop as soon as I got the truck back together so I didn't have any time to work on the problem. I guess I'm wondering if you guys could come up with some ideas of what I should look at. Does the waste gate acquator have to be hooked up to build boost? Now that may seem like a crazy question but I'm not sure if 30pds would be able to push the waste gate open. I don't think so but hey I sure don't know everything. I was also thinking that I may have a boot leaking or somthing like that. On my stock turbo I would only see 28lbs of boost but that was the stocker. Don't forget this is an 03 and boost is machanicly controlled.
Thanks guys,

That sounds pretty odd to me. I would try to use zip ties to hold the wastegate shut and see if that is your issue. I know with my SPS62 I have no issues at all getting 45 PSI boost with just Smarty 4.11 SW9.
Adjust the wastegate rod a little shorter. It is blowing open from drive pressure. A shorter rod will put more preload on the spring in the head and hold the wastegate shut. Do at least 2 full turns, but if you want to run 40-50 lbs of boost, do three or four full turns on the threaded rod.

i was told for my silver bullet that a full turn of the wastegate is = to a half lb of boost. dont know if that is the same for the one you have though.
You could always make a manual boost controller to adjust the wastegate if its too much of a PITA to get to the wastegate to adjust it. PM me if you want more details. Its pretty easy and you can adjust the boost when ever or however high you want to afterwards in less than a minute. will cost ya about $25 in parts and about an hour of actual work time.

Hey guys,
Thanks for the replys!
I went out this morning and found that one of the boots on the I.C. was a bit loose and that helped alot. before when I hit around 28pds to 30pds the truck would lose boost and the truck would fall right on it's face. Anyway now it runs so much better but all I get for boost is 30 - 31pds. Now when I hit 30pds it stays there. I still don't have the boost that I should though... I looked at the adjusting rod and there arn't many threads on the rod to adjust. There may be a thread or two but I wont get much out of it. Does that sound right?
Thanks again,

Hey guys,
Well mystery solved!!! I talked to a guy from Industrial Injection today and he gave me a few things to check out but everything checked out good.
I had to drive out to Boston today (300 miles round trip) and when I was getting off the interstate I noticed something didn't sound just right. I made a couple of quick checks but all seemed ok. I got the truck back to the shop and pulled the air intake and found the problem... The shaft in the turbo has about 1/4" of play! Yep 1/4" up and down and in and out. I guess I'll be in the shop at 3am pulling the SPS 62 off and putting the stocker back on. Man this sucks big time. Has anyone else had trouble like this with a rebuilt turbo?
This is just back from Industrial Injection. By the way anybody have any idea how they are to work with as far as service goes.
Thanks,

run the smarty tunes that are for aftermarket turbo tunes. I tryed the same turbo you are running on 5sw and did not see 35lbs. Now i see 42lbs no problem with mild TM for the aftermarket turbo.
