Need Winch Help, Electric or hydraulic!!

Hey All,

This is my first post but have been hanging around (registered) for quite a while. Anyway, I just installed a warn Trans4mer brush guard and winch mount and I am ready to buy a winch. My primary uses will be for uses in emergency (occasional light offloading), Utility (pulling small timber onto my flatbed), looking good (making room for myself in Walmart parking lot ).

Initially I in tended to pick up a warn or Mile Marker electric. But, my buddy swears by Mile Marker hydraulic winches. He claims electric have less power, burn up, etc. So I thought I would throw it out there and see what you folks think.

BTW I don't want to start a flame war.

I love my Dodge!

Warn Electric.

Ask any number of offroad guys like me that use these things and 99.9% are gonna tell you that.

Not that you'd being doing anything that extreme... but it's nice to have a winch that will run off a battery when you're upside down and your motor can't run... or simple as... you're motor won't run for whatever reason. Hydraulics run your steering and brakes... adding a winch in the mix adds one more point of failure.

Alot of the newer winches are using overload protection. I've never burned one up personally... you'd be doing alot of winching at one time to fry one though.

Also... should you ever want to ditch it... get some money back... you'll be able to sell it much faster. There's a much larger market for elec. vs. hydr.

hope that helps.

I am was also in your situation. did alot of talking with diferent people. from what i have found it is all up to how mutch you plan on using it. I am going to go with a hydroulic mile marker or a commercial grade like rki. I plan on running on my McCorminck cx105 tractor and 2005, 3500 DRW. However most of my pulling is usually long distances 150 + feet and when you get a 12,500 pound tractor and mower stuck I believe this is will be my best bett. After talking to other with equipment like this. as far as the wench not working if you cant start you truck. I am not sure I would wont electric for fear off me running down my battery. and than having a 2 problem. Howwver for what your needs are I am sure you would be happy with electric.

I have a MM12klb hydro on my truck, left over from my jeepin' days. It's way faster than it was on the Jeep, but I'm going to put an upgraded Ps pump from one of the vendors on pretty soon for some more flow. I haven't used it yet, but have cycled it in/out 2 times with the help of a forklift

Warn Electric.

Had one on my last truck. I went with the 9500 hs. This thing ran like a top , even with the abuse I managed to dish out to it. I had to make sure and block wheels or I would pull the anchoring truck in every time. I think I have some pic's in my gallery showing what these will get you out of.

Thanks for the input folks.

From what I am hearing and based on my needs, I don't think I have a need for the hydraulic winch. And, an electric will work both with and without hte engine running.

Especially with our dual battery setup.
We can pull ourselves twice as far as those with only one battery, and most likely still have enough juice to get the engine restarted when we get there.

Hydraulic if you're using it non stop and can keep the engine running.
Electric for the occasional recovery situation, just remember to let it cool if doing a long pull.

I will get some pics up in a couple of days. Has anyone heard anything about T-MAX winches?

They are less than warn but claim to be made better (don't they all?).
