I hear guys that have done it say the drone sound inside the truck is awful. On long rides you can get a headache. (no muffler). If you tow a trailer it get wrost. They say it sound cool driving around town. I put a better exhaust and muffler on my and it sounds and rumbers great. Not too loud and still quiet when the wife rides. (the muffler.... not the wife)

I have tried 5 different exhaust combo's on my 05.5 and if you don't mind the drone, especially with a trailer on, straight pipe it. Otherwise go with a magnaflow muffler, it will sound good, not quite as loud as you may like but without alot of the drone.

Drone keeps me company on long trips.

You can purchase a muffler delete pipe relatively inexpensive, so it wouldn't be a bad idea to try it and see if you like it. Everybody hears things differently so it's hard to say if you'll like it or not.

People say the drone isn't as bad if you leave the cat and get rid of the muffler, from what I've read.

The in-cab drone is not near as bad if you have a quad cab long bed. I first lost the cat....dog chased it away, then the muffler later. It is a little obnoxious at the top end of 2nd and 3rd gear, but that doesn't last long. A friend has a quad short box, which was loud inside. He chose a muffler!?

I am on my 4th exhaust setup.

1: Stock, no sound.. wanted a little more
2: No muffler, stock cat: good sound, horrible drone at 1200-1500 when cold, too loud when towing.
3: Donaldson 40", no cat: great sound, no drone, but moderate when towing above 2300rpms. The thing that killed this combo was the exhuast brake, it was so high pitched it hurt! Especially when outside the truck with it on.
4: Donaldson 40" and megacab resonator: I love it, sounds similar to #3, but nothing excessive when towing, and the EB is dead quiet.. similar to stock.

I will be sticking with #4 for the long-haul. I do need to do some clamp repair and minor alignment issues... but thats for longevity, not sound quality.

If you tow or haul the straight pipe will make you mental.
I have a 40" Nelson, should be the same as AH's Doaldson except I have no drone. I have a cat still though.

<EDIT>

BTW, my Nelson cost me a whole $67 Cdn from my local Cummins store.

I like my aeroturbine. Good sound and not too loud, little drone. If I want it louder, I just open my sliding rear window. Straight pipe it if you are in your twenties. I love the way they sound going down the road, just as long as I am not in it.

Are you calling me mental Will??

I think the trick to the straight pipe is the route I took by gutting the kitty and adding a pipe through the center, essentially making it into a resonator, losing the muffler, and keeping the OEM MegaCab resonator farther back. I have no drone ever.

I have the Cat still in place, straight pipe, and the megacab resonator still in place.

Sounds great and no drone, ever.

Well, I am a little deaf in my left ear from competition shooting, but it's only a couple decibels.
