Mechanical V.S. Electronic power

I have had a Cummins certified mechanic, and a Dodge service writer tell me in the last six months that the best, safest way to add power is new injectors.

I want to add 50-75 hp. Are injectors the best way?
What are the advantages to injectors Vs a box, chip, programmer etc..
With 50-75 hp injectors, is an upgraded lift pump required?

Thanks, Colby

lift pump should be required for almost any mods. a box would be the easiest way to get the hp your looking for. alot of cheerleaders on here for the smarty jr.

I think they both have there place. A box can be turned up, down or off if egt's or smoke is a concerned. If you get a good injector like F1's they wont be smokey and you shouldn't have to worry about egt's. I have DDP's in the 2nd gen and they are both smokey and hot but they are a little bigger than you are looking for so I don't have an answer to that. But yes a lift pump should be in the mix along with gauges when ever you add more power to your truck.

I am not necessarily looking for the easiest way to add power, but the safest and least complicated, as far as what is happening in the engine when it's running.(not including installing the component) Also, not worried about turning it up down or off.

is warranty a concern? if so i would definately go with the programmer route. also, if your only wanting 50 hp. why would you want to spend $1k instead of just spend a few hundred.

if i were you, i would do the electronics. they have proven to be reasonably safe for the motors if they are operated responsibly

Injectors on CR engines are usually only used if someone is shooting for 500+wrhp and is usually the 8th mods not first. Your stock injectors have been knowen to make 600+wrhp. A good set of injectors is gonna be $1,000 + god know's what shops now charge to install them $500+ all the supporting mods your gonna get talked into like intake exhaust lift pump, gauges and before you know it your warranty is void and your alot deeper then you wanted.

Yeah back in the old days of 12 and 24 valves alot of owners would upgrade to a set of RV 275 injectors and call if good, well things have changed and were are in the age of electronics where things can be done better then the old mechanical diesels.

Everybody here is going to tell you to get some type of downloader because it best suits your needs and is the perfect answer to your question.

If all you want is 50hp then get a Jr. You will be all smiles and you can run it with everything else stock and you wont void your warranty.

Its as safe and easy as it get's to add 60hp

Really no such thing as adding safe power over stock. It is a risk, period, that you take. A set of sticks and towing in mountains you will not be able to control EGT's because you can't turn them down (Mechanical). An electronic box will allow you to do this in just a second. That is why electronic is more acceptable and safe for CR engines.

I understand that. However, for example adding 50-75 hp is probably safer than adding way more then that. On a stock truck.

Thanks for the replies. Colby

INJECTORS!! Some flux 1's would be your best bet. The injector tips in these trucks go out quite often. Don's injectors are th absolute safest on the market and you would get rid of the number 1 failure prone thing in your common rail engine. Yes chips and programmers are the cheapest but I think injectors should be peoples number one mod since I've seen and heard of so many loosing them and taking out motors. I don't think you'll have a problem with flux 1 injectors and egts. In fact you might even drop a few egts.
