MBRP too loud when towing????

I just had the MBRP muffler put on my truck about 2 weeks ago, and liked the sound at first, especially just everyday driving, but this weekend i towed my 29' gooseneck flatbed w/ about 10-12k worth of stuff on it for 150 miles and it about drove me nuts. I also put a 5" dual wally SS exhaust tip on and thought i got it out past the fender far enough to take care of the drone?? Is their anything else i can do to quite this thing down under higher rpm's while i am towing, i tow day in day out during the summer, and this thing is gonna get old in a hurry, especially on long trips.

A resonator may help.

I would add the MBRP resonator, that should take any drone away for good and get it just quite enough!

The resonator will kill about %50 of the drone, but you will still hear it, and it will still get anoying on a long tow.

I have almost the same set up and pull almost the same weight. I kept the stock pipes and no cat. I agree it can get pretty loud when a take a hill with a big load but i don't notice it much on the flat. I don't think I have any drone, I have a 6" tip on now and I put it out as far as I dared without looking stupid. I think I will probably go to 5" tip eventually, but the preformance shop gave me a smoking deal on the 6" tip because he just got them in so I thought I would try it for a while. I would try the resonator everyone was talking about.

I guess i will have to give the resonator a shot, either that or put the stock muffler back on, cuz this thing is annoying. I wish they (DPPI) would have told me that i needed to spend another $150 to do that, when i told them i wanted a little more tone, but didn't want to hear it in the cab. Seems to me they have sold enough of these and researched them enough to know how to direct their customers with the particular wants and needs they have, that's why i called them .

I have the 4" MBRP 409 SS system on my truck and have the resonator and the drone is gone, but there is still a good tone when you get on it, like it should be. Towing does not change it for my truck, and would bet it wont make much difference with yours. I know it will make the difference, plus you will be able to have a nice quite conversation with your wife or girlfriend if you want to....LOL!

I can't speak for the guys at DPPI, but I think you are being a little unreasonable in your assumptions. It has been my experience that what is an acceptable noise level, varies DRASTICALLY between customers.

The same system on 2 trucks and one guy say's it is too loud, the other too quiet. No way anyone can predict what your particular definition of acceptable noise is unless everybody understands and uses the same measurement in describing it.

Perhaps if we had posted decibel levels for each system and the end user actually understood what those levels meant, then you would have a viable argument.

But as it is now, all a sales person can do is guess what you really mean when you say "I want a little more tone, but don't want to hear it in the cab."

I think if we posted that, EH&S would be all over us, as I'm sure the "good" sound range would be a good 10-30 Decibels over the safe threshold limit for people

I do agree though. I run the same system and I get more of a drone, than a tone. I'm looking at putting the resonator on to get a bit lower, deeper tone. I don't mind the loudness love the straight pipe, sounds sweet, but hook up to 10,000 and I need ear plugs (if you "don't" want to talk to the wife or girlfriend) I highly suggest the straight pipe idea

honda_guy4,

Lary's right there are major differences in what you and a another customer would call loud. There is no way to quantify it for all possible combinations etc. That said if the MK96116 is installed on a 2004.5 + Dodge and the cat is left alone there is almost no difference in level. UNLESSS you edit, then it'll get louder under load like a trailer. You signature didn't have any information about what year truck you had or so so I can't be sure what you actually have etc to see if we can help etc.

Mark @ DPPI

I have the Flo - Pro with dual outlets running to duals of course and it is el perfecto !!! Not too loud at all but has a mean big block gasser kind of sound with a lil KW mixed in for good measure !! Kitty ran away from home sometime ago so it's all muffler and it doesn't drone hardly at all . Pulling hills with a good load it gets a bit loud but with the windows up it's not very noticeable . Got my system from www.rpmoutlet.com prices are good but service is pretty sad .
