Angry MBRP Muffler On...Sounds Like Crap

Put the MBRP on today...Left the Cat...Much louder than stock, and sounds like crap....Kinda sounds like a plastic bucket over my tailpipe

Since this IS my first diesel, maybe it just wasnt what I expected it to sound like...I'm not convinced it isnt on backwards...Its not marked in any way...I may try turning it tomorrow....Oxman was right, removing the '06 stock muffler is a PITA!!!! And since I had to cut the old muffler off, it wont go back on without some engineering....

Anyway, DPPI shipped it super fast

maybe it would sound better if ya had that optional straight through section ahead of the muff instead of the " resonator "

When I first installed my MBRP system I absolutely HATED the way it sounded. I thought it sounded like an overgrown ricer, but your "plastic bucket over the tailpipe" is probably a pretty good description. If it wasn't welded on I would have boxed it back up and sent it back to the folks I bought it from.

Now, it is much better. I don't know if that's because I have gotten used to it or if just, in time, soot has collected on the inside and changed the sound. With mine, I was pleased with the sound that came out of the tailpipe. In fact, I loved it. It was the resonance that came from the muffler itself that I thought sounded terrible.

Anyway, you might try leaving it on for a while to see if the sound changes.

well I just took a 30 min drive....City, backroads, and highway....This really is a quiet muffler at highway speed, and in higher gears....Low gear, low speed and it really rumbles....The sound bouncing off of buildings is great, just in the cab it sounds weird...It will probably grow on me, it just wasnt quite what I expected....And I cant hear my turbo anymore

BTW...Is that skinny peddle a little peppier now?? Seems like it isnt laboring as much, and cruising rpms are lower

I've had 2 3rd gens both with MBRP's and both sounded like the 'bucket' when idling. BUT...get on it hard and it really sounds MUCH better both from inside and outside the cab. The 3rd gens just don't have the same idle sound as the old 12 valves did and I don;t think there's any way to get it.

I just got back from the coast today pulling my 12,000lb 5vr. First pull since I swiss cheesed the air box, Rokktech sensor & MBRP muffler & I love it. Going by a lake that has a barrier along side the road had to put the back passenger window down to hear it rumble as we were pulling a hill. Not near as loud as the Banks was on my 2nd gen, but no drone & you can still hear the stereo.

Herrin821,

Sorry you had an initial negative feeling about the MBRP Performance replacement muffler, the muffler sounds great, but at idel and in the cab the 2003+ trucks just leave something to be desired overall sound wise. Outside they sound great especially if you're pulling some weight on an incline, kind of 24 valve 1998-2002 sound!!!!!

We have sold over 450 of them and folks love them, the fit/install is actually pretty easy (especially if you're factory muffler isn't welded, some are clamped on) and quality is very good. If you're after more sound level and more turbo whistle get our off road test piep for the cat, that wakes it up some. Then consider the AFE StageII instake with the 6 inch outlet filter and mandrel designed intake tube to the turbo, that really wakes up the turbo whistle! It also prepares the truck air flow wise for a HP module or programmer and helps keep the EGT's down. Call us if you have any questions etc.

Mark @ DPPI

My factory wasn't welded, only 400 miles on it. The problem I had was the factory torqued down the clamps so hard that they crimped the muffler to the pipe, no way it was coming off in one piece. Speed shop below my store let me run it down there where they chisled is off, we slipped the mbrp on, they spot welded it for me, fit and finish were excellent, and I like the sound. Thinking of taking of the cat but I hope to run accross someone that has done it so I see how loud it really is then.
