Manuel vs auto
Manuel vs auto
How much slower is the new g56 then the 48re in lets say quarter mile time or speed, and 0-60? Im talking about maybe a dtt or ats trans on the auto, and a clutch and short shift kit on the manuel. What are the benifits of both and what times would you want one instead of the other?
The auto will pretty much always be at least a full second faster, if not more. You simply can't shift these trannies fast enough, even with a short shift kit. That, combined with the auto being able to 1) Build boost before launch and 2) Keep the boost high during the run.
For highway towing though, I prefer my handshaker. In traffic, not so much!

if you're going to tow very much and there are hills near you, get a stick. if you mostly want to hot rod, drive around town and tow occasionally(less than 25%??) then get a built auto. from the sound of your post it seems like you may want to play.
to answer your question, an auto will obviously be a lot nicer in town and will be quite a bit faster. the stick gives it a big work truck feel and is good for just that, being a work truck. there are quite a few times I wish I was rowing but I use my truck for city/commuting too much and only occasional towing(a handful of times a month)

Test Drive them both I tow all the time so I got the g56. I wish I got the auto with the 3.73 and just built the auto. I don't like the g56 (I don't believe in running high rpms in a diesel 2600 at 80)
It's all personal preference. For me, I would rather have my legs cut off rather than drive an automatic; I hate them. I wish they all would die
But they do have advantages for racing and stuff like that. It's all about what you like and what you want to use. They should make an F-1 transmission for these things! Now that would be cool!
The advantage of the manual is obviously when towing, you can have a great exhaust brake and a lot more control of gear selection. Also, with my 22.5"s, I can now cruise at 75 at 1900 RPM.
Like the one guy said, drive them both and see what you like!

Manual envy.
I've run a DTT auto for years now and would order a G56 on a new one. Simply more control. Sounds like the 6-speed guys are going to be hurting for parts though on the NV5600's. I can't believe NV is not staying in business for replacement parts though.

Ive had both
Two NV5600's and a Billet DTT
If you are on the fence and could swing either way, definetly get the auto, just as long as you get a built auto from one of the big 5 builders.
My old 99 w/ DTT, comp box and Mach 5 injectors would kick azz at everything, towing, racing, mtn roads EVERYTHING. As far as speed and racing goes hands down auto by almost 2 seconds in the 1/4.
You can build boost at the light and wont loose any boost between shifts, and you dont have to let your foot off the gas between shifts. The 6 speeds are not designed for speed, it like a box of rocks
A short shifter wont make you any quicker and aftermarket clutches only make it harder to shift over a stocker.
On my current truck 03 6 speed I got the 6 speed to keep me out of trouble since its slower and always will be slower and it would be a waste of money to make it go quicker.

If you want to race get an auto, just be prepared to spen a few thousand dollars on it when you do any mods to the engine.
I don't trust autos, especially Dodge auto's which don't have a good reputation.
