Mag Hytec Help

So I've been having problems with a leaky transmission (see my thread in 3rd Gen engine and drivetrain, 2003-2007) and right now it looks like my Mag Hytec pan is not sealing correctly.

See the pictures below - it appears the pan does not fit quite correctly? The first couple pictures show the rear of the pan, you can see the cutouts in the pan don't match the outline of the tranny, and there is rubber or plastic visible:

This picture shows the front of the pan - you can see some seepage around the edge, as well as the plastic (gasket)? in the seam:

These ones show a corner from two angles, and you can see the plastic stuff sort of bulging out:

So what's up with that? This pan does require a gasket, but I can't tell if there is one in there or not - or if it's incorrectly installed. What about the pan cutouts not matching the rear of the pan - is this ordinary for the Mag-Hytec?

HELP !!

it's hard to say. It's possible you have a 48RE pan on a 47RE trans but, that shouldn't make a big difference with the pan. It's easy enough to drop the pan and put in a new gasket.

Don't know if you've owned the truck since new but, if not... maybe the last person didn't use the correct gasket. I believe they come with a cork gasket.

Not torquing it down evenly can cause that too. It needs to be done just like torquing down the lugs on your wheels.

If you can still see the serial # on the pan... you can call May-Hytec and ask if you have the correct one for your truck

Wouldn't my 2004 have a 48RE? The pan is certainly for that transmission.

**Edit to add:

I just checked the Mag-Hytec page and this pan fits both transmissions.

Are you sure it is the pan gasket and not the band adjustment torx with locknut. Mine weeps a little there. No big deal but it shows wet around the pan gasket just as yours does and I have the stock pan on it. It will dribble after a long hard pull.

Not sure how I'd tell - where exactly is the band adjustment torx?

Mine has been dribbling every time I drive it, but only since recent tranny work.

Drivers side in front of tranny linkage and above tranny cooler lines. Can't miss it. It's a bolt with no head and a locknut. If mine seaps, that is where it does it.

change the gasket...... Do not use the stock rubber gasket ... Mag Hytec pans come with a thin, cork gasket and it seals... sounds funny but had same problem... thought the thick heavy rubber gasket would be better but was wrong.. use the thin paper or cork gasket and that should solve your problem....

Is that a 727DD? Mine does not have the Ears like yours.

From your pics, it looks like the reusable gasket IS in place. Was it torqrued correctly, and in sequence?

Mine has been in place for >1yr with no issues. The dealer has even had it off twice for trans work.

It's possible the trans and/or the pan got warped. Maybe call mag-hytec and see what they have to say.

Mine's the 727 D. I wonder why it has those funny cutouts and the DD does not? I took it to the dealership, they replaced the gasket and re-tourqued everything very carefully (they say). I'll keep an eye on it to see if it continues to leak. The gasket is still visible in the rear cut-outs (ears?) which seems very odd to me.

I had to use one of the Dodge gaskets as my Mag-Hytec supplied one dissapeared at some point over the past month of tranny issues.

If the leaks continue I may just order a DD and throw this thing in the river.

I would check to see how tight the dealer torques the hex nuts. They call for surprisingly light pressure,,,12-15 ft-lbs, I think. Over torque could possibly cause a leak. If they don't loosen easily, I would retighten with mild pressure and see what happens.

I don't remember on my tranny pan, but I know the Mag Hy-Tec differential cover looks like it's the wrong shape...like you describe. But it works!

I sent an email to their customer service, along with a link to this thread. They got back to me right away and confirmed that I should not be using the rubber gasket. I'm going to order the correct one from Mag-Hytec and I'll re-install if the leak continues.

**Edit - scratch that, they want to charge me $30.00 shipping for a $3.00 gasket. With the UPS brokerage fee it's going to end up costing me $60.00.

I'll have to find a Canadian source.

Thanks for all the answers guys,

This is a little confusing....
http://mag-hytec.com/Dodge%20Trans/Dodge%20727-DD.pdf step 9 says that cork does not work well w/ alum-alum surfaces. But that step also mentions the filter replacement.

Also, I re-used the reusable gasket on my DD pan install with no leaks over the last year.

We'll see. I found a source for the Transtar fibre gasket in my area, so I'll pick one up for inventory. It's entirely possible that my pan is done leaking now that it's been adjusted and torqued correctly - I'll keep an eye on it and won't bother replacing the gasket again unless I notice further leaks or seepage.

I'm still a bit confused about the purpose of the cut-outs on the D pan which expose the gasket, but as long as it stops leaking I won't worry about it.
