Long term results of running a chip?
Long term results of running a chip?
I am considering buying a Quadzilla Box. However on my last truck I never had any mods and ran almost 200k miles with no trouble what so ever. I do understand that adding more fuel and heat shortens the life of the engine. What does everyone think? I want a little smoke out of my stacks but I don't want to rebuild the engine with any less than 3-400k miles. Thank Aaron
with luck you only have about a 50/50 chance of warrenty work being honored without mods. if you get a dealer who will honor your warrenty chances are he will do the work with or without mods (as long as the mods are within reason).
best thing to do is find a dealer who will put the mods on for you.

fitzy dog, there is no way that you can guarantee getting 300-400K on a Stock motor, let alone a mod'ed motor. If you want the highest probability of getting to 300K-400K then keeping your engine 100% stock is the safest way to do it.
Cummins rates these engines for an average of 350K miles before major engine rebuild. They do state that if you tow frequently, that will decrease the rating because you are working the engine which increases the wear rate. The marine version of the 5.9L is rated at 425 HP but doesn't carry the same longevity ratings as our trucks.
Obviously turning up the power will bring down the life of your engine. The way I look at it is that I have decreased the life of my engine from 350K miles to 300K miles by modding it. However it will be sold long before that. I would rather take the 50K mile hit and have a truck that I enjoy driving every day, rather then driving a slug.
Honestly, I got to think that the guys constantly pulling 5th wheels every weekend is putting MUCH more wear & tear on their trucks than me running around empty with a 60hp box on.

if you are talking about the 65 hp towing box I would run that without worries off damaging anything. I would also expect to get a ton of miles out of it.
If you are talking about the 140hp race box I would proably be leary of getting as good as stock milage out of it.
I am sure someone in the frist or second gen forums could pipe up to having a modded truck and having problems or not once they got to high milage.

I'm a 300K, owned the truck for 29 months and 100K miles. Been turned up in some way since 220K.
To date, the only things that have bit the dust is a stock turbo (thrashed for over 40K miles) and a couple stock clutches.
The engine is showing some signs of wear, but for all I know it could have idled A LOT in it's first 200K miles. I know nothing of how it was treated before I bought it.
If I owned a newer truck, I wouldn't be worried about the engine, but about the supporting systems...fuel pumps, injection pumps, injectors. None of those newer systems hold up as well as our old stuff. Period!
But that's my opinion.
