Lock up switch working??
Lock up switch working??
I have got a early 04 and just wired up the lock up switch on my transmission. I got a 2 wire toggle switch. Pulled the wrong plug on the driver side transmission and located wire #7. I tapped into wire 7 and ran a wire to one side of the toggle and then the other wire coming off the toggle I soldered a 33ohm resistor in and grounded it. I put my truck in drive and flip the switch and it will stall the motor.. But I tried it out going down the road and flipped it soon as I hit 2nd gear and the shifts feel the same and so does the motor power.. I also flipped the switch on doing about 50mph and floored it and it downshifted.. Thought it was not suppose to downshift. Is it not working correctly?
With my switch on it will down shift when using cruise. You can add a light to tell you when the T/C is Locked. One side of the light connects just past the resistor and the other wire on the light is scothed locked to my cig lighter. When you hit the switch the light comes on. With the switch off the light will come on any time the T/C is locked. Another way to wire the light is after the switch. This will tell you the switch is on.
Well I know the switch is working because if I am in driving sitting at a redlight and flip it then the truck will die.. But it doesn't feel any different if I hit the switch wot vs not locking it up. Also when cruising about 50mph i can turn the switch on and floor it and the truck will downshift.. thats not right is it? Thought it shouldn't downshift
Does it go to overdrive from whatever gear you are in when switched, say at 15 mph? Mine does, and mine will downshift sometimes depending on speed, and RPM's...not all the time though....I put a light on mine.....my 2 cents. Probally no help though.....
So say if Im going 15mph and I hit the switch should it go straight to overdrive or will it shift still til overdrive?
As for downshifting, it depends on how your VB is set up. If designed to do so, it will downshift with the TC locked. From your earlier post it seems you may have a fairly tight converter. You may not feel a real positive lockup with that converter.

I also locked it up and eased into the pedal and it did shift through the gears a lot faster.. I also noticed after getting on it hard with it locked up i pulled up to a redlight and my trans temp was running a little hotter then normal.. It climbed to about 210 or so.. Did i slip something?
If you VB is setup for the correct pressures you should not have slipped it by getting on it. You may just be seeing the results of the power being put thru the trans. Even locked up the power is going to translate into heat somewhere in the trans as it has to absorb the energy. The 210 temp is not even close to worrying about.
The question about slipping something is a good one though. You could be slipping the TC or direct clutches or both if you hammered it with a lot of power in the engine. It takes some massive pressure to hold the TQ a high output engine can develop and thats a special build.
So should I just lock it up as soon and it shifts into 2nd at wot? and turn it off when I let out of the gas? Thats the highest it got was 210 sitting at redlight after I used the lock up.. Also I was cruising about 45mph down the highway and i locked it up and the trans temp dropped really quick!! Thats good right? I shouldnt slip anything just cruising around town with it locked up as long as I don't try flooring it and it dont downshift

It won't lockup until 2nd gear unless the VB has been modified. Flip it off when you go thru the lights or you let off the throttle and ALWAYS do it then so you don't forget. They do make a racket when you stall them with the TC locked. If the temp dropped as soon as you locked the TC your good. Its just that tight TC causing the temps to rise a little faster. As I said before as long as they stay under 240 or so cruising around and playing you are good.
How does it launch with that tight TC? I used what would be an 88% or 89% when I did mine becuase of the lack of fueling under 1600 and it worked out pretty good for that. It is a little loose yet but the fluid coupling is much better than stock.
That TNT tune can slip things on the higher settings if your not careful. Not giving it all the throttle at low speeds would be a good idea unless you want an Ultimate trans in there.
