Lift pump woes & comedy

I wrote in the Engine&Drivetrain forum about getting a bad tank of fuel and my fuel pressure being low. Turns out after changing the filter it was not the fuel it was the lift pump headed south.

I went to 2 local dealers about getting pump replaced ASAP since I am on the road alot and I did not want to wait until pump died.

Both dealers just laughed and laughed.
They did not stock the pump and they would not order it until cleared by STAR. I asked what happens if truck dies tomorrow on way to Peoria.

Response was "call a tow truck".

Went to Cummins, after waiting 10 mins for them to find the part # I was told they did not stock the part either but could have one tomorrow.

I asked about price. $315

After reading about several folks adding a holley blue pump by the tank I decided to give that a try, sooo I went to O'Reilys auto parts.

By golly they had a holley blue. Price $115.49 with tax. Things are looking up.

Went to Menards and got fittings and then went home to start the project.

My wife says that the scariest and most dangerous thing in the world is a guy that thinks he knows what he is doing.

The following story is being presented mostly factual. Goof ups are admitted to with the hopes everyone will not beat me up or ridicule me too hard.

Mounted pump, then realized after reading instructions that pump was not mounted right, so remount the pump.

Cut the metal line in front of pump. Cut line a rear. Trust me do them in this order.

Install compression fittings with hose barbs already installed.

Cut and install rear hose.

Install front hose to barb on metal line and tighten clamp.
Answer call from my boss.

Crawl back under and uncoil hose to cut it, and get a face full of diesel that had accumalated in the hose.

Now pump is installed, splice on wires to front of truck to operate pump.

How am I going to turn the *&^*? thing on.

Try to start truck, no fuel pressure now without new pump running.
Shut truck off run hot wire through firewall and run red wire from pump through firewall.

Ground pump under hood, start truck and manually twist wires together to get pump to run

Drive to auto parts store, turn truck off and open door and bend over to get to wires tied togther.

buy relay, connectors, inline fuse and switch.

Repeat process to get home.

Finally completed everything. Even wired into my security system. Everything works.

Pressures :

Before - 4 lbs idle and 0000000 at 3/4 throttle

After - 22lbs idle, 20lbs cruise at 72mph, 14lbs at sustained wot (mph ? )

Is there someone who sells a stock lift pump eliminator ??

I would like to get rid of stock pump before it dies completely.

Hope this brightens someones day.

You could get the 05MY stuff, as the pump is in the tank, but it uses the same fuel filter housing.

jnck,

you have basically the same system I have installed on my truck, and it's been working great for over a year.
