Well, I guess I am in the club now, the lift pump on my 2003 3500 went out on me
@ 70K . unfortunatley it finally came to a final stop parked in front of the hotel lobby with my truck and trailer blocking 8 vrhicles of whom some were wanting to leave for their evening meal... oh well, if you are going out, go out big ...anyway towed to local Dealer, Edson Alta. they had it in first thing in the morning and out by 10 am. and back on the road. Warranted by the dealer. Thank you very much Edson Dodge Dealer. You are on my happy list!!
Later, speaking with a devout dodge freak, he mentioned that with a lift pump change and with it probably being an upgraded lift pump, he felt that with this installed, it would boost my HP to 325. does anyone know if this is or may be true? I do notice a little more oomph, as on the trip home the truck pulled very strong, with the old 120k/mph at the bottom of the hill and the 135kmh at the top with my foot not inside the pump just pushing it a little fuel consumption seems to a little higher.
One more question............I saw deep in here somewhere a jobber had an electronic system to engage your transfer case into 2 lo bypassing your front diff. Anyone have any information on this system as I am very interested in it. great for backing up with a loaded trailer on soft ground and tight corners..........

The lift pump will not increase your engine to 325 hp. However the power increase you felt is just the power that you slowly lost as your lift pump got weak. I just had my lift pump replaced at 29000km and my truck now runs much better. Power is defiantly up and I am seeing 3-4 more pounds of boost.

This makes me believe their may be some truth to the power increases claimed by FASS and Air Dog.

can someone explain the differance between a fuel pump a lift pump and a vpp44 or an injector pump????

 

I'm also currious as to how the lift pump works? I know the other pumps are motor driven but how come the stock ones are so prone to failure vrs. the other kit? I was looking at the FSS (forget the rest of it) pump, cause I really like to know my truck will be there 100% for me when I need it to be? I may throw in a kit anyway to be safer than sorry. Also how much are the stock lift pumps? Is this pump (stock lift, or aftermarket) only to get fuel to the filter, then the main pump driven off the motor pushes the pressure up to the injectors? I appreciate all your help. Thank you guys

 

My truck has been in the shop since last Tuesday cause of the injector pump. Dealer call today and said the part is still on backorder and they have no way to track when one will arrive. I driving a loaner car til the truck is fixed.

I "joined the club" this week too. Got 22,000 kms out of it before it dropped dead on the road. With a full load of calves behind it too. So towing was going to be a little hard. However the mechanic came out and did a little trick to get those lift pumps working again for a little while at least. With his handy "lift pump adjustment tool" (a little hammer), with the key on he tapped on the side of the pump (lightly because it's plastic). After a couple taps, yelled start it and it fired up after a couple seconds of cranking. He said this should work to get them working again for a little while. At least long enough to get you off the road. I drove to the next town so they could work on it there. It stalled out 5 times and each time I got out and tapped on the side a couple times, got back in and it would start up again. I made it another 30 miles and they changed it in a parking lot. 15 minutes they had the old one out and the new one in.

It's a 2004, 3500 Dually that we pull a 30' stock trailer and custom haul cattle with. Pretty frustrating to now have this to deal with. I didn't notice any difference in power with the new pump, just started consistantly working again without having to use the handy "lift pump adjustment tool".

 

Well, my carter went out after a year of use, I think around 30k. Good part was it did not completely quit, just got real weak and truck lost a bit of power. Since I carry a new spare under the seat I was up and going again in around 20 minutes.

 

The lift pumps on the 3rd gen trucks seem to be even poorer than on the 98.5-02 trucks. At least there are several alternatives in the aftermarket. Apparently, BD sells a booster pump kit which can be installed down by the tank. This seems to be a wise solution as these pumps don't suck well, so the lower the mounting, the better. I may get to install one for a customer soon, so we'll see if it's any good.

Also, I don't know about the US, but up here, the dealers are pretty sticky about warrantying these lift pumps unless you prove you have changed your fuel filter every 20,000 km. Seems a little ridiculous.

 

We didn't have any problem with that. If you follow the maintance schedule the first fuel filter change is at 24,000 km's. We changed ours for the first time at around 20,000 km's. But the mechanic that changed my lift pump said the fuel filter doesn't much matter. It's just the lift pumps arn't built well enough (too much plastic that breaks).

 

I guess I'm not doing so bad then, 27,000km (knock on wood) does anyone know what one is woth up here? I'm thinking a spare would be real handy.Which side of the pump is the filter on anyway, suction or discharge?

 

Anyone get a trouble code? My 03 just died tonight on the highway, 29k miles. No warning just dead. Code is p0629.
