Knock/Pinging question

I've tried a search, but haven't found what I'm looking for. I have an '05 that has recently developed a slight sound I can hear under acceleration. It reminds me of the "pinging" sound that a car has when the octane is too low in their gasser.
The sound is not the standard clacking sound that I like from my CTD, but rather a ping or knock. I have a Edge HOT Juice that I usually drive around on setting 2. I used a bottle of Diesel Clean the other day when I filled up, but still no change. It only lasts for a few seconds, and is not loud (my wife can't even tell what I'm talking about), but it is there.
Any ideas from all those experts out there?

Does it do it at the same RPM all the time? Mine started doing the same thing about 4 weeks ago and now it real bad from 1200rpm-1700rpm. It idles smooth and makes no noise over 1700rpm"s. I think that it my relief valve opening and droping the rail pressure, but I'm not sure.

I have another post starting about my relief valve so watch it also.

I had the "injector knock", in my '03, HO. It occurred at low rpm's (idle to 1400) when you put a load on the engine. By that I mean, at idle without my foot on the accelerator, it would not knock. As soon as you put it in gear & let out the clutch (loading the engine), the knock would occur.

Took it to the dealer, twice & duplicated the problem (which, they acknowledged) & filed a complaint with DC. DC would not do anything about it.
I then read of a TDR member having the same problem & he had a shop remove the injectors. They found that the tips were covered with a carbon build-up. The recomendation was to use a fuel additive and/or run the hell out of the engine. It seems that many owners that tow heavy on a regular basis don't have this problem. These engines appear to be built for heavy-duty use, not just cruising around town.

I tried an additive & it took quite awhile to work. Actually, I hitched up the trailer & towed it to CA & worked the engine fairly hard. When I got to my destination, the knock was gone. Either the additive, working it hard or both certainly seemed to help.

Last week, I started to notice the knock coming back, again. I have not towed or worked the engine hard since the beginning of May (May Madness trip), which leads me to think that working the engine is probably more effective than just the additive use, alone.

I just went for a test drive to really pay attention to when it was happening, and if it made a difference on Edge set at 0 or 2 or 5. The pinging seems to be right about 2000 rpms, when under load (accelerating), and especially when it kicks down a gear (I have the 48re). Sounds like maybe the injectors like you are talking about Joe.
I'm guessing it's not timing, only because it happens from stock (level 0) all the way up to level 5).
I'll continue with a few hard runs over the next week or so to see if I can clear out the injectors. I hope that's it.
If anyone else has anything different to add, please do.
Thanks.

Not an expert but have some experience. Here is another dimension and this applies universally to all here. Many of the various additives raise the cetane number. This has a net effect of advancing the timing as you are shifting the timing and rate of the combustion process, which in turn will cause the noise you describe. In addition, many are already using ULSD, which generally has a higher cetane number to begin as well. The timing on the '05 trucks is a bit strange.

I had this same pinging/knocking on my new 06 right after I installed the Edge Juice. It happened in all levels, even 0. As soon as I removed the juice, the pinging went away. Maybe your Juice has developed a problem??

Be cautious

Just a heads up from my "knocking" experience. I thought I had the same problem with carbon build-up/injector issues. Went out to "clear" things up and ended up getting a new long block and turbo. Dropped a valve in #5, but like yours, the sound was only noticable at times (under acceleration, higher rpms) but while cruising it sounded normal. A quick check under the valve cover might not hurt.

With the new engine I have done much more pulling and working of the motor so I have not had any of the issues with carbon or sticky injectors. This time though I am using Seafoam every couple of tanks as well just to make sure.

Good luck.

At what milage should the valves REALLY be looked at/or adjusted?? I have the same knocking noise at any rpm w/ boxes on AND off????

Personally I would retorque the head and run the valves at 5k miles... But maybe I'm too hardcore. I just know that at 30k mine blew the headgasket and the bolts were not that tight at all... Now the engine is as quiet as a gasser.

I agree... Even if you don't run alot of aftermarket mods you should at least retorque the stock bolts.

I guess I got lucky...LOL

Factory freak headstuds and gasket!

That ping is sometimes "normal"...my brothers 04.5 does it sometimes and we run the heck out of that truck. It performs well...mileage and power, so I am not 100% sure about the carbon buildup.

I think some of it may be due to a "lean" spot in the fuel curve... I know that if I'm running the TST by itself (rarely) the combustion makes alot of noise if I gradually let off. It's just the cylinders leaning out after a heavily fueled run... Timing rattle will occur at low RPM and WOT, you'll hear it the most before the turbo spools.
