Kats Tank Heater

Has anyone installed a Kats tank heater? If so, where did you determine the best location to be for the unit.

These things heat a bunch better than the soft plug heaters. I'm having trouble finding a reasonably easy place to hang it.

I may not be of much help, but they do work well. I had a tank heater on my '82 F-250, when I still had it. Had a strap bolted to the frame (next to the engine, in the engine compartment, drivers side), then just used hose clamps to clamp it to the strap.

FWIW

Thanks for the idea, I'll take a look at the possibility.

Anyone else?

Sory I aint gona be much help either but I am considering doing the same thing. I would like a Espar heater but until I can aford and justify one I would like a Kats heater. I figure I will just look around and find some where to bolt one of those straps that have a million holes in them to and then mount it to that. I do have a question though. Where is a good place to get the coolant from. I will probobly just take one of the plugs out of the head and run it back in there but I dont know where to get the coolant from that would be down low.

I believe the block drain is a low located flat head with about a 5/16 hex key recess. Haven't tried it and don't know for sure. If so, it would be a good pickup point for the low connection.

If you have power available the Kats should be every bit as good as the Espar.

Ya at home power is no problem but at work I have to get in early to get to a pole to plug in to. I have to be to work at 6 am the way it is and I dont like going in any earlier so it makes it hard to get to power at work. I may just start parking in the "Office" parking and using one of there poles. Now I also have a work bomber to drive. I have had it a few years but its been down for almost a year now and I just got it back up and going. So hopefully it will make it threw the winter and I wont have to start the truck for a short run to work.

Haven't looked on the Cummins for a place to hook one up. When I put one on my Ford, one end went into the block just above the oil pan, the other was in one of the heater hoses. There was a y fitting that came with it to do that.

Make sure the heater is plumbed properly. The tank heater could chatter if the flow is going backwards through it, with the engine running. The heater has a pump in it to circulate the water.

Chattering Kats

There is now a note in the instructions not to leave the heater plugged in when the engine is running.

Nothing worse than a chattering Kat.

I think the instructions mentioned that at that time also.
