I ran a K&Nair filter in my 2000 Dodge Cummins for 173,000 miles. I cleaned it twice a year. I never had a problem with the turbo nor wear on the engine from "dirt being sucked in".
When I sold the 2000, it did not burn oil and still ran strong. As a matter of fact, I believe it was running stronger than when I got the truck new.
I have a K&N in the stock filter housing on my 2006 with 10,500 miles on it.
I have enough faith in the K&N I'll keep it on the truck.

^ Me too! I have the K&N drop in. I just had mine out today to clean it - and to check because of this thread! Not one spec of dust in the tube, or oil in the tube or turbo. Just so happens though, when I was at Autozone to get the cleaner kit for the K&N they had a cone air cleaner ( like comes with most of the amk. intakes ) on clearance. 70% off the already clearance price of 24.99! Do that math! Thats only $7.50 ! I bough it and a 3" PVC pipe union and put it right in the end of my factory air intake hose. Even drilled a hole in the PVC for the air temp sensor. Whole thing cost $8.49 plus tax! The turbo screams now! It is still an oiled filter just like the K&N so I will check the tube every day for a week ( I drive over 100 miles per day ) and go from there! I'm gonna go get the specs off of the package. Hopefully someone can post the specs off of a factory filter if they have it.

I like the Nano filter.. good flow. No dust or oil to worry about. I run K&N on my bikes and my Miata.. all 3 let in slight amounts of dirt/dust. They run cleaner dirty. If that makes any sense.

With the lower miles on the bikes and less $ invested I don't mind. But NOT on my truck!

Only K&N?

Is this limited to K&N or all oiled filters? I am using an oiled AFE stock filter replacement (drop-in). After reading the this post I am a little worried. I know they make a dry filter but I just spent the money on this one. Should I run it till it needs to be cleaned then think about a dry? Sounds like most people have problems after they clean and oil the filters? Thanks.

The answer is simple: NOT.

IMO, the answer to any question about whether to use an oiled gauze filter is always NO!!

Especially since we have such great, high flowing dry filters out there now-- there's no need for oiled gauze.

Look at the Donaldson Endurance and AEM Dryflow...

I had a K&N for about two and a half years and around 60k miles. I didn't have any trouble with it. I did switch to an amsoil replacement filter about two months ago for kicks and grins, but when I installed it, I wiped the intake tube with a paper towel and there was no residue. Hope this helps.

I want to be honest here, like el jefe above, as I said, I am running a K&N full intake with the conical filter. Last I checked, there was no dirt/oily rseidue inside my intake tube. I juse prefer the peace of mind of getting the Amsoil Nano.

Just a note to all that think K&N is a good filter, I wouldnt run one on my lawn mower. They lost the patent years ago and are living off the name they set a long time ago. There no good anymore, sorry K&N thats the way I would have done it also. Build my name up and then let it go to hell and ride the wave. K&N is living off there reputation.. Just my .02....

I agree, I was using the filter 30yrs. ago on my street bikes, and they haven't changed since then. The only reason their were a hit back then was because they were the only aftermarket filter available anywhere, and their definitely not high tech., just gauze.

Fomer desert racer here. I tried K&N back in the early eighties. Filter was junk and sucked more dirt in the motor than if I just ran panty hose over my intake boot. It's funny to read about this here. There's a jeep forum that members complain about K&N's sucking dirt too.

I just installed the new AFE prodry drop in filter. Flow is way better then stock. I went with AFE for filtration % is one of the highest far more then airaid or K&N.
I've also ran k&n in other things as quads and have since went back to something else had poor filtration lots of dirt.
