K@N vs. AFE

I was curious to know how many people run a k@n as opposed to an AFE intake. I know that a K@N is supposed to make your turbo oily but I know price wise there is a big difference. I am about to purchase one and just wanted some opinions. Personally I know a bunch of people with K@Ns that havent had any problems. Let the opinions begin.

K&N here, and i have not had any trouble. I bought mine before i joined this board. I picked K&N because of the company's rep. If I was was to do it all over again, i would go with AFE.

I've had my aFe stage 2 with PG7 for a while now as well. No dirt or oil in the tube or the turbo. If I had to do it over again, I'd go with the same kit. It's a little more $$$, but worth it in my opinion.

I ran a K&n for 15000 miles and I had no problems with it. I put a bigger turbo on so I wanted something that flowed more. I never had any dirt pass and the turbo was spotless when changed out.

I have a K&N set up on my truck as well. i was scared by everyone telling me about dirt, so I smeared a dab of grease inside the tuba at the first bend. I checked it 5k later and no dirt on it. I know it is not as precise as a oil sample, but it makes me feel better. I am curious about the oil on the turbo though. Is that after it is reoiled or with K&N oiling it?

You will see on the turbo blades a coating of oil. I dont have this, and i have had my K&N for 27k miles. I think it is from people oiling too much.

-Stage I AFE is a heatshield with your choice of filter, standard blue, Pro Dry 'S', or the Proguard 7

-Stage II AFE is a sealed box, with the AFE Torque tube and your choice of filter.

I've had both and for the money, the stage I is fine. You can build your own torque tube. On my 3rd gen I went with the stage I with the new Pro Dry 'S' filter. No more oiling! Here is mine with my homemade torque tube.

That is what I was thinking. I have a Cobalt SS also and everyone on that forum says they are junk. They re-oil them then the oil coats the MAF and causes a check engine light. I always use the aerosol can of oil and very lightly coat the filter and let it set a while. It looks patchy until the oil soaks in, then it is ok.

Sealed box? Have they changed the design? Mine is open at the fenderwell and front, with louvers on the bottom. Had it a year and still like it.
