It's Time!!!

Alrighty fellas, it's finally time to start bombing!! My plan is this: TST box, stage 1 injectors and transmission rebuild. I have the 47RE so I know that will have to be updated to handle the new power. That is where my biggest question is, I would like feedback on DTT and ATS. I have searched and read every article on this site about the two companies and have already talked to both of them. What I would like is feedback from actual users of their products. Both were great on the phone and seem to be very knowledgeable. I know a couple of guys here have ATS trans. work done and a few with DTT. Not trying to start any brand wars here, I just want to know what works the best. I don't tow much except my '41 Dodge truck every now and then, so mainly this will be just to have fun with. Any input would be very appreciated.

Are you drag racing, or towing heavy? Daily driver, or work vehicle? Personally, I like the way DTT addresses a lot of the internal components that ATS either doesn't address or addresses differently. ATS basically optimizes your tranny to operate in locked mode... their TC is stout, and will hold no matter what. Of course I've never heard of a DTT TC slipping, either. Both manufactirers have trucks in the 700+ HP range running their trannies with little problem. It comes down to your driving style and what you're trying to accomplish with your tranny. I chose DTT because I like a convertor that is tight in fluid coupling mode. I also like their proprietary pistons that use zero gap rings to eliminate internal leakage, which is one of the main reasons a tranny wears out. However, the day I was going to drive my '99 to DTT for the full treatment, I found a buyer for it and I'm now waiting to buy a 3rd gen. I am still debating as to whether I will wait until the warranty is over, or rebuild it soon after getting the truck. Here's the best bet... since you know people with both trannies, drive their trucks and compare for yourself! Call the companies and ask as many questions as you can, and go with the company you feel most comfortable forking over $5K to.

To everyone else about to hit the "reply" button, let's keep this thread friendly and objective!

Thanks

I was hoping for help just like this, it really is appreciated. I will not be doing any heavy towing. I do have an old Dodge military truck I tow every now and then but not much. Even when I do it only weighs about 6K so it's not too bad.

I just want to have some fun with this truck. I will not be drag racing but want to pep this thing up and enjoy having a fast, good running truck. It's actually one of the reason's for buying a Dodge. It has been KILLING me to wait this long to start any serious modifications. I only know "of" people with both trans. from this site. I do not know them personally and from the addresses, do not live very close to any of them. Usually I trust customer advice before sales advice. Like you said $5K is a lot of money to throw down and not be happy, just hoping I can get some advice here to help make the decision. Ultimately I know it's my decision but good information always helps.

I hear alot of talk about ddt and ats but nothing about suncoast. I have a local guy hear that does alot of performance work on diesel trucks. He swears by suncoast parts. He runs their trans in his own truck, and puts suncoast parts in every one of his customers trucks. I have investigated them all and I have decided that I am going to go with a suncoast converter and VB. Their prices are about the same as ats and I have heard nothing but good things about them from a few different people. I am no salesman for suncoast but I think they need to be considered as a reputable trans company.

Agreed, Suncoast builds some serious stuff. Definitely take them into consideration as well before you decide. I know Nowell was running a Suncoast TC for a while in the Red Rocket with great results, not sure how much of the rest of the tranny was built by them, but I saw that truck make what would have been a 11.9x pass on those Suncoast parts, except for a little tire hop that made it a low 12's pass. I wouldn't blame the DTR or the TDR or anyone else for the fact that ATS and DTT get mentioned the most, though... it's probably because there are more people running their stuff on these boards, and everyone is excited to tell how great their new $5K toy is. I'm sure there are some Suncoast owners out there tho that should pipe up in this thread.
