Installing wheel well liners and mudflaps - A few questions
Hey guys. I just picked up the rear wheel well liners and front and back molded mopar mud flaps for my 04. The wheel well liners went in without a problem and look great. 8)
The mudflaps are giving me a little grief. First of all I'm a little hesitant to drill into my truck's metal to install these things. In any case, I installed the rear flaps for the most part - which is basically removing 3 of the current bolts, putting the flap in place and replacing those three bolts. Once you do that, it asks you do drill with a 1/4" bit into the plastic of the wheel well liner, and pop in a little plug to keep them together. Did that no problem. One hole left. Now the instructions ask you to use a 3/32 drill bit and drill a hole in the truck, to secure one last self-tapping screw. Well the tire is in the way of the drill, it's impossible to get it in there straight. When I tried from an angle that was close, my 3/32 bit snapped like a twig. What have you guys done? At this point, I have both of the rears on without drilling this hole or installing this screw. They seem fairly secure but I'd like to have the job done right.
The front flaps require 3 holes to be drilled , another which the tire is in the way of accessing, and one from underneath (although I broke my 3/32 bit now >
) I'm contemplating just paying a half hour labor and having the dealer install these and drill the last screw in the backs unless there's some easy way to do all of this. Curious to hear from those who've installed the mopar molded flaps.

Re:Installing wheel well liners and mudflaps - A few questions
I installed the molded flaps on my 2002 and pretty much had to remove the tire to do it.
Did one side by turning the wheel all the way one way,
drilling a hole, turning it the other way, drilling a hole,
then gave up and removed the tire for the other side.
I don't think I ran into any probs with the rears, there was plenty of drill room.

Lightman,
For the rear flaps I sild my hitch in the receiver and the used the floor jack to jack up the truck by the hitch. This raises the body but the wheel's stay on the ground and will allow you to get in with the drill.
For the front I just turned the wheel to one side.

Big Ed, thanks, thats a good idea for the rears, that darn BFG is in the way! I still don't like the idea of drilling into the truck but I guess it's necessary to hold them in? They sure seem pretty solid right now. I guess I need to run to Lowe's for a new 3/32 drill bit.

I had to jackup the back end of my truck to drill holes for the Husky Liners molded splash guards on the rear.
Just dab a little RTV on the screw threads and the hole and you shouldn't have a problem with rust developing.

Lightman,
I wasn't excited about the drilling either, but it went well and they look great. I was getting sick with the rocks that I was kicking up at my new truck!
I did the fronts like the others are saying, by turning the wheels. Wish I would have thought about jacking up the rear, would have saved me some time pulling those rear tires... >

Gotta love when the board comes thru like this!! 8)
Thanks guys. I just got them done, and am very happy to not have paid the dealer a dime. I got a 3 ton jack today from sears for $49(!!) and jacked up the back end enough to drill the last hole in the back. Dabbed a little black RTV on the end of the screw thanks to MikeyB, and they went in with ease.
Turned the front wheels back and forth and was able to get them on with ease as well! One thing I noticed with the fronts, is that they specified for me to drill a hole that was already predrilled. It was a way bigger hole than the self tapping screws would work in, but luckily I thought of stealing the metal retainers off the factory tiny wheel well liners and used the retainer and screw from that which worked perfectly to hold both sides in.
I'm very pleased now that my truck should be a little more protected! Rear wheel well liners and 4 mudflaps INSTALLED 8) Ahh, on to the next mod!

Clean 10x, I bought my rear wheel well liners from Jay Wolfe Dodge here in Lee's Summit, no discount, paid $89. I ordered my Mopar molded flaps from mydodgeparts.com, they're in Dallas, TX, paid $68.44 including shipping, ordered late Tuesday, arrived Friday. I would have ordered the liners from them but by the time I paid shipping it would have been more than buying locally. What dealer do you deal with near Leawood, KS? Good Luck
