Injectors next!
Injectors next!
Gentleman,
I have decided that I want to boost my power a bit by getting some larger 160Hp injectors
. (nozzles) difference?
the cost from one place quoted me 750 (unknown brand yet)
install... $350
tested & balanced."more" $
this was exchange.
1st, what does tested and balanced mean?
are nozzles different than injectors?
I have a Smarty JR on the 80 Hp setting and run (Bio in summers)
(NO problems so far)
what will these new injectors/ nozzles do?
is there a better place / brand to get ???
whats a good price for the parts/ labor?
thanks so much for your help!

Common rail and injectors are not like older model trucks with mechanical injectors. 160 HP tips is running major fuel and your stock CP3 pump will not keep up with them and you will lose rail pressure, especially if you run an aftermart programer.
Yes nozzles are differnt than injectors. With the CR injector you can add nozzles to increase performance since the CR injectors are electormechanical. YOu could with other injectors as well but it is the cheaper option on CR injectors. As an injector body with stock nozzle will set you back at least 350 a piece.
Testing applies to these injectors but balancing is more of term used for mechanical injectors involving pop off pressure. But I'm sure there is something that can be done to ensure flow rates of each injectors, but For CR injectors you have to have CR flow bench for testing and they aren't cheap and to my knowlege the only after market companies that have them are DonM of F1 diesel and industrial injection and the occassion bosch injections shop.
The install price seems about right.
Those tips would require some major upgrades to keep up with them.
You can get that power increase and then some with Smarty Sr. At some point you will likely have to have your injectors rebuilt or replaced, unless you can ensure 2micron fuel and absoluty no water in the fuel as alge will build up in the injectors over time. Then have tips added at that point but much over 60 hp tips need pump upgrades to maintain rail pressure.

^^^ I agree with most of the above.
Without serious and major uprades in just about every area of the engine (fuel upgrades, turbos, big turbos, studs, exhaust, cooling system modifications, cam and etc) you will find these injectors to be far too big.
There are a number of companies (more than just listed above) with test benches now and can help with injector rebuilds. Proper balancing makes the injectors all flow about the same amount (within 2-5% of each other) and is important. The prices quoted are definitely on the cheap side.
Bottom line is, 160 is big stix capable of making mid 900 hp.
Determine what your actual goal is, come back here with that info and we can help you better. But 160 stix on a basically stock engine is no bueno.

your going backwards in modifications. You are putting more fuel into your cylinders without adding more air. In turn this will cause worse fuel mileage, more soot and high EGT's. IMO, turbo and injectors should be the last power items that gets put into your rig. You have to build your truck up to better mods, not start with the big stuff and work your way to the Peripherals
WOW tha is some GREAT info, and better and more specific than allot of what I have found.
I completely agree with all of you, I didnt mean to sound like such a nu-bee!! thanks for the education!! thats one reason I love this forum
I have no supporting mods to work with nozzles THAT bog!! including the tranny (i'd spin that sucker right out of the truck)
I dont even want that much power for the ammount all those things would cost $$$$
my total budget is ONLY around $1000
what I have SO FAR:
-Smarty JR (highest settings)
-*****'s Whistler...
-4" exhaust (no cats)
Auto Trans. (stock)
I turn 35" mud tires @20 Mpg AVG.
what would YOU do next??? (no appearance items)
THANKS!!!

I'm shooting for 550hp with good drivability...i've done gauges, smarty sr., intake mods, trans build up, fuel pump, turbo, cp3 mods and now doing 50hp injectors....haven't dyno'd but i'd guess i'm close to 500hp before injectors....personally, i'd get the trans built as the next step.
x2 with the above post, save your pennies and do the tranny first. No questions asked.
I pretty much have the same things done do my truck as you have mentioned. Smarty, intake, exhaust and 35's. My trans is sitting on my shop floor with the input shaft in 20 pieces waiting for a complete rebuild. It's on borrowed time bud.

Maybe I missed something but I don't see were you have a set of guages. If not you need get them. Minimum of EGT and Tranny Temp. If funds available then get a boost gauge. You can keep your motor and tranny happy by driving by those gauges. Then on to the tranny so you can have more fun. At least a Torque Converter and Valve Body. Shaft aren't overally nessary unless you doing burn out all the time, sticking it in mud holes, drage racing or sled pulling, or constantly romping the heck out of it, but it is a weak point.
